Here is what I think.
The liberal Democrats swelled with pride that the electorate was finally eating their political dog food when Obama was elected and the Democrats took all three branches of the federal government in 2008. Then the 2010 red wave, and even though Obama was elected for a second term his entire terms was one of a split government. And then Trump in 2016. What all of this did was to make liberal Democrats insane with desperation to reverse course.
Note too that the Democrats had become the corporatist establishment party by this time. The new information economy relied primarily on Democrat political connections rather than the old GOP-connections of the industrialized economy.
So what we have is a Wall Street and media backed (Wall Street owns controlling interest in the corporate media) colluded propaganda effort to foment chaos in the system and brand the GOP with responsibility for it. Because the status quo would otherwise mean the Democrats self-destruct as the electorate was absolutely not buying their political dog food.
When the field is not to your advantage, you need to make a different field. The Democrats are the American political and corporate establishment run by the globalist managerial class and ruling class and as the US pulls back from the post Bretton Woods Global Order and seeks to return to a more America-First political agenda, the Democrats have gone to their basement strategy meetings to realize that they can only blow up the entire Great Experiment if they want to retain power.
This is a deconstruction project. Canceling the USA as we know it, and reforming it into a globalist collectivist administrative dystopia where the looting species of human that tends to be liberal Democrat thrive.
We are at war and have been. They have been winning.
What I find fascinating is the Democrats never understood or even contemplated why Obama lost the Congress in 2010, nor why Trump won after Obama's 8 disasterous years.
