It's a bit astonishing how thoroughly they've ignored Trump's free-speech threats regarding Israel while praising Vance and others for supposedly chastising Europe's recent record on civil liberties. We'll see if the name "Mahmoud Khalil" comes up once in their episode.

I'm definitely letting my subscription lapse. When you have Lee Fang and others covering these issues SO much better, my money is better spent elsewhere.

Glenn is a brilliant journalist. I have followed him since the Salon days during GWB - that’s over 20 years But I think something broke in his heart when his husband died. His derangement over Israel is legendary. After Oct 7 I wasn’t up for his IDS anymore. If he also raged against despotic slaver nations like Qatar for example equally I would still follow him. I don’t need to agree with my sources of information but his seething is too much to take.

I also wish he had stuck to writing instead of going all in as anchor-man. He’s so talented but he doesn’t have the charisma or gravitas to pull off a daily video gig. 🤷‍♂️ I will always be grateful for his true patriotic service in helping Snowden and do check in on his work still on occasion if infrequently.

I agree. I know these governments aren't saints. But when I see a clear seething hatred toward Israel, at best, I take it with a grain of salt. We all have our biases. I just avoid anyone spewing hardcore hatred and try to keep an open mind. I've already been through enough with the last five years - I don't have the bandwidth for it. IDS indeed.

Sigh. Indeed. Again if he went after, say Saudi Arabia, or hell, Azerbaijan, or maybe Türkiye with the same vehemence AND also Israel I might be able to take it. The double standards are deafening. The fact that Glenn is of Jewish heritage isn’t lost in me either. That’s an interesting consideration psychologically.

Balance is my motto. Honestly if anyone is too hateful in any direction it seems a giveaway. A friend invited me to a NYC club where 2 podcasters that are often on Jimmy Dore were performing - but their entire act was insanely cruel toward Jews. I mean cruel in the way people felt they could suddenly act toward the unvaccinated because it was sanctioned hate. It REALLY bothered me.

Everyone is so fragmented into groups that it's lonely. No one allows for nuance. Everything is so black and white. If we agree on 3 of 5 things that's just not good enough. Plus I live in NYC where I once chose to live with "my people" and it just sucks. I have exactly 1 friend IRL that I can say what I think to. 1 is better than none. BTW I need a damned tutorial on navigating this site. The design is confusing - or maybe it's just me. I went to design school where we did some re-design of apps.

As has often been noted, social media amplifies social fragmentation.

Rest assured, I've supported Glenn's work for years (and have been a supporter of System Update from its very start!).

I cancelled my subscription when it became clear that Matt Taibbi was ignoring or trivializing Trump's free-speech threats. He and Walter at least said a few words about Mahmoud Khalil's arrest and detention in this ATW episode, but it was pretty weak stuff. I recently subscribed to Lee Fang's Substack site; he seems to be fairly impartial. FIRE (thefire.org) and Reason have also been doing a good job regarding Trump's free-speech threats.

Very well put! And yeah, Lee’s coverage has been superb – he’s not giving the Dems or European leaders a pass, but is also exposing how the “free speech” mantra of the right is really just a way to usher in bank deregulations that, otherwise, would have been impossible; the fact that Matt used to be so brave with his economic reporting just makes his fall that much more disappointing.
