Flacking for him in US media, and defending RT (literally a state-run propaganda outlet) are certainly "advancing Putin's interests", though, as you put it. Not to mention, attacking the Democratic party relentlessly on shaky grounds, which has the clear effect of advancing Putin's interests in US domestic politics.
