I had not watched the Racket News podcast since — you know.
And I actually was curious about the new.
Anyway, I did watch the whole thing today. Is it alright if I long for the former format?
So disappointing, let me count the ways.
But carry on. You don’t need to accommodate old geezers like me. But if I may suggest, if you are serious about 1A, don’t yuck up serious topics when neither of you are funny. Just a suggestion.
Some pundit once noted that intelligent, serious people discuss ideas, while today's podcasters mostly just attack each other's characters and appearances, which while intellectually lazy is fine for entertainment (as the judge ruled for Rachel Maddow's shtick, true for many others).
One of the most interesting and thought-provoking conversations I have witnessed is the ATW episode months ago wherein MT and WK discussed the germination of AI. Was that episode in response to the AI suicide friendly contact that resulted in the death of a human? I think. Anyway, I value being exposed to that.
I was also gobsmacked with that conversation. WK described Barack Obama's campaign as the first "algorithm driven essentially AI" campaign. ATW often had profound conversation. It was far and away the best podcast available. This new thing isn't fit to tie ATW's boots.
The show today was really a disappointment. I don’t think anything was gained by ridiculing Whitney Webb. What’s more the presentation was dishonest. The clip they used was totally unrepresentative of the substantive portion of Jimmy Dore’s interview. The clip was used to suggest that she looked crazed in some way. It was a personal attack of the silliest kind. It was sophomoric. If they had aired a segment from the first 20 minutes of the interview, their audience would have had a completely different impression of her.
Whitney has done a lot of good work on the encroachment of the techno-surveillance state and the role that oligarchs play in that project. She talks about the data centers with their huge energy consumption that are invading the countryside. She talks about the criminal violence that has been used to silence people who where scheduled to appear in court in Ohio.
We should worry about the undemocratic methods that are being used to bind us to a way of living that will make our existence harsher, less free, and significantly more desperate.
T-minus six minutes and counting... I'm gonna try REALLY hard to listen to TN again tonight.
Yes, Tracey has an obnoxious personality and rudely interrupts Matt constantly, just like self-absorbed "Boomer" Kirn did, but Michael does know Capital Hill quite well, which he showed when he did System Update pol interviews back in the summer of '24.
I realize that he's a complete dolt about foreign policy who regurgitates CIA power points like any MSM tool, but I can find competent analysis for that elsewhere.
May I suggest that you put your "Racket" logo on the top of every distribution? I saw "Today's News" and was deleting it as I notice Racket Staff in smaller print. I get a lot of "news" that I did not subscribe to and delete it all.
No for me, I usually give them a few minutes when I find out they are on and quickly bail. There is better news out there than this. I no longer pay much attention to Racket. Sad, but true. We are getting less written content from Matt now when he said he needed to hire a staff to free him up. Hasn't happened. Seems to be some other stuff going on, did Emily Kopp get fired? I have no clue what is going on. Makes me sad, but things change.
I can't believe a girlboss getting fired and not complaining to high heaven. Could be she quit but doesn't want to appear weak. Most likely, it's some girlboss shenanigans to gain more control.
I owe you some "reliable" news sources, Marie. On foreign policy I follow The Duran (Alex Cristoforo and Alexander Mercouris) , The GrayZone (Max Blumenthal and Aaron Mate), Neutrality Studies, The New Atlas (Brian Berletic), Danny Davis's Deep Dive, Sonar 1 with Larry Johnson, anything with retried military guys like Ray McGovern and Doug MacGregor, economists John Mearsheimer and Jeffrey Sachs, (RT) the Russia Times, Katie Halper, and Danny Haiphong, just to name a handful of my regulars. I follow lots of people in China. I also keep track of Code Pink (Medea Benjamin), who was in Cuba recently with Halper and some others who got roughed up by U.S. customs Patrol.
I am horrified but what my country does in the name of "freedom and democracy." The scales fell from my eyes long ago. I was radicalized by the Vietnam War. When Reagan was elected and Clinton followed his lead, economic "globalization" finished off own middle class. I tried to explain to a friend why gas prices are rising at the same rate (approximately) all over the world, even in oil-rich countries. National sovereignty is no more. Russia, China and the other BRICS countries are trying to claw it back. I'm with them. It's not our job to tell other nations how to govern themselves, especially when this is always used to obscure the real reason for sanctions, proxy wars like Ukraine and other forms of regime change. Our politicians are bought by the corporate and banking elites who want to control not countries' values but their resources. Predatory capitalism uber alles.
Today’s News? Getting a little better, BUT I get the impression that the title of the show refers to the news business as it functions today rather than the news of today. Can we please have less of the former and more of the latter? Matt has serious chops on financial regulation, lawfare, the intel community, presidential/electoral politics. And Tracey as well as Matt are well positioned to comment and report on the Trump administration. I subscribe to Racket to get their independent journalism on these topics, not just lampooning Whitney Webb and Jimmy Dore (worth 10 minutes at best). Finally, a style suggestion: if you’re going to rip a clip from another podcast, PLEASE play the whole thing and then comment rather than chopping it up to pick apart every screw up as it comes up.
For me as a European, there is not much to see and even less to think about. You both do exactly what the weird podcasters you are presenting do - just vice versa. No analysis, no wit and very, very little substance. I take another pause and see whether Racket News becomes a valuable source again. Good luck.
I hope you all remember that Monday broadcasts only began in Fall 2024 when the current events were impossible to cover in the just one Friday recorded session. A few months later when Matt announced he was going back to his original format we all shamelessly begged him to continue the Mondays, and he generously complied. So technically you all are getting a freebie. If I were Matt, if all I read were petty complaints, and not worthwhile and well-meaning criticism, I'd just shut down Mondays and take my kids to the park instead. Same with Tracy. When Walter was here he got a good helping of criticism and trolling. Now that he's gone it seems as though he's greatly missed. So what is it? I happen to be interested in a great amount of Matt's work. That includes usually something in every podcast. That's enough for me.

Is it unfair to expect more out of Taibbi?

Does anyone watch these?

A chip on your shoulder about 'girl bosses' there, Gary? Get over it! You sound very, well, boomer-ish.
No, this is just as I see it.
Interesting how you have no arguement other than name calling. So typical.
WTH, with all the boomer comments. Geez..

You clearly need to get out morelikr Matt recently said andstop following all yhrde doom sayers. Even if they are right, it is depressing
Absolutely, they bring out the best in each other. 2 smart dudes half f’ing around half reporters and it’s awesome.
My thoughts exactly. Judging by the volume of comments, I assume a great majority have had enough.
Yeah, it's really sad, I watched ATW twice a week and really loved it.

Walt?
This is just not interesting. "WHO WOULD PLAY MICHAEL TRACEY IN A MOVIE???"
Literally who fucking cares? Where's the news?
JIMMY DORE CLIP! WHY DOES THIS WOMAN LIVE IN SOUTH AMERICA????
Oh my God who cares! Shut up!
Why don’t they play the clip of Tracey on the Jimmy Dore show and rip that apart?
If you're referring to whom I think you're referring to...OF COURSE she lives anonymously in South America! If you were her, wouldn't YOU?!
It was cool getting a glimpse of your mystery producer. He looks like a man on a mission.
Tracey was ok doing his sarcastic RNC interviews. I’m happy to wait 4 years for a repeat of that gig. I’m not happy watching Unfunny and Unfunnier.
Someone just tell me what they said minus all the bullshit and podcaster twaddle, it won't take more than two sentences
A potentially interesting subject but I could not be any less excited about the prospect of watching Tracey’s smug face wobble.

What is going on at Racket? No Swamp Log today?
