Another resource: The Panama Canal Museum Collection (PCMC) at the University of Florida in the Department of Special & Area Studies Collections (SASC) is a leading research collection for the study of the American era of the Panama Canal. The collection documents activities and experiences in the Canal Zone and in the country of Panama. To a lesser degree, the collection also preserves historical information about the Canal prior and subsequent to U.S. construction and operation. link: https://pcmc.uflib.ufl.edu/

Fascinating timeline. Best one yet since it stretches back over a century. During the Biden open borders regime, Panama was a conduit for illegal immigration. The UN, Red Cross, and many NGOs were facilitating the human trafficking. Michael Yon has been living there and reporting on it for years.

Trump is hilarious- he lives to get under people's skin and it seems to work for him. He sure lives rent free in a lot of people's heads!

badnabor's avatar

Trump keeps devising new ways to wield leverage. His detractors can't keep up. He is the only President in my lifetime that has actually been able to out maneuver the DC lifetime squatters and show positive results.

Heidi Kulcheski's avatar

Many a historian of the future will write about his time as president and the accompanying global shake up that ensued. He is taking an incredible gamble and I really hope with all my heart that it pays off. The rest of the West will be a beneficiary of this.

DarkSkyBest's avatar

Is Marshall McLuhan dead? Seriously. The media is so part of the Trump derangement --- somebody needs to write a thesis; but of course, if you want to kiss your doctorate goodbye.

DaveL's avatar

I’d like to “kiss a lot of doctorates good-bye.”

With all the back rent he owes in other's heads, we could have re-purchased the Canal.

So the Panama el presidente denies China controls the Canal - but on March 20 Peking tells CK Hutchison not to do the deal to relinquish ports on BOTH ENDS? And then he calls Trump the liar? Can't make this stuff up

Hegseth is a hotrodding, mouthy hick, way out of his depth, like the rest of the MAGA herd. The U.S. cannot "take back" the canal, posturing aside. Trump's assaults are all verbal and his bullying demeanor covers a fat, rich boy's insecurity.

Ian's avatar

Your comment smells of little more than partisan whining. Looked at through this timeline, think what you will of the methods, but they appear to have already yielded results that are beneficial to US security and regional trade interests. I wish it were otherwise but my wishes, nor anyone’s else’s, do not matter: politics and geopolitics is often a Machiavellian game.

You say that the current administration is out of its depth. However it is a slew of previous administrations that have let our palpable interest in the Panama Canal backslide to the extent that Panama joined Chinas belt and road initiative.

StanleyTwoBrix's avatar

believe it or not, not all of us are mindless dorks who think the entirety of the world falls into "Democrat" and "Republican" categories.

I would think, Ian, that at this point you'd realize there ARE two sides - except the ruling class is on one side, and the rest of us are on the other.

Saying you hate ebola doesn't make you a hantavirus fan. Not liking Charles Manson doesn't mean you like John Wayne Gacy. Not wanting to get kicked in the balls doesn't mean you want to be punched in the face.

Really isn't that hard. How long are you going to be slavishly devoted to people who have never done anything but steal from you?

What are you, Chuck Schumer?

Kath's avatar

This. Outstanding.

MajorSensible's avatar

I agree with you in general - it's not a binary choice.

That still doesn't excuse the OP in this case. If they had argued on the merits instead of posting a comment that was 67% puerile insults they would be more likely to be taken seriously.

Ian's avatar

Also your reply is kind of a bizarre straw man and doesn’t really follow from my comment.

StanleyTwoBrix's avatar

Maybe you should look up what "partisan" means, champ.

Criticizing a Republican doesn't mean you are a Democrat.

You do know what "partisan" means, right?

Ian's avatar

If only I could distill my worldview into such a simple one as yours appears to be. Life would be so much simpler and involve so much less thinking.

StanleyTwoBrix's avatar

If only this comment made any sense.

Someone criticized a Republican.

You point you finger at them and say, "you are only saying that because you are a Democrat!"

I point out the painfully obvious - that criticizing a halfwit who happens to be Republican doesn't mean you endorse the Democrats.

That's not a worldview, any more than knowing apple aren't oranges is a worldview.

After you are done looking up what "partisan" means, you should probably look up "straw man".

Paul Edwards's avatar

For what party, Simple? Democrats are worthless; reality matters. What "results"?

What "US security and trade interests?" There have been none, and there will be none. Politics is not "often" Machiavellian: it is always that. Of course, Panama is intimidated by our dying empire but there will be no repossession. That's just

Trumpian tripe, like the Canada and Greenland idiocy.

badnabor's avatar

So Paul...launching your own verbal assault against Hegseth and "the rest of the MAGA herd"; Is that your best, considered argument? Boy howdy, your own "boy's insecurity" is now out there for all to see. Good job...I guess?!

Paul Edwards's avatar

You "guess"? Are you capable of forming an opinion, Nowhere Man?

badnabor's avatar

Oh, I've formed an opinion, I'm just not inclined to stoop to you level and share.

StanleyTwoBrix's avatar

I love that you think this is a burn.

Adorable.

Paul Edwards's avatar

No. Keep it to yourself. That way you won't be attacked for it.

Anne Emerson Hall's avatar

I wonder if you read all the way to the end. It looks like the verbal jousting by Trump and Hegseth opened up greater cooperation on the part of Mulina and Panama.

TeeJae's avatar

I would bet Hegseth's visit involved threats of a coup and/or assassination if Mulina refused to pull out of China's BRI (which is what this whole situation is really about). It's what the Deep State (incl DOD and State) have done around the globe for decades.

Indecisive decider's avatar

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see where you said he was wrong. You don't like him personally, which I guess is fine to not like a personality, but you've comingled that distaste with policy. 2 different things. You should try again.

DaveL's avatar

A lot of argument is done that way nowadays. Don’t like what is said? Prescribe the “out of depth” label. Or “so-called journalist.” Variation the on ad hominem theme.

After a while it gets to seem like a biologist looking through a microscope at a variety of vermin in a petri dish. There’s really only one gang out there, and what we call politics is just the little power plays among the various thugs who run the world. Like the internet itself, the people who set the rules control it forever. I think it’s time to change the channel, start fresh and see what we can do. It couldn’t be worse.

“In a communist regime, distinctions between private and government-owned firms are not as absolute or clear-cut as in a Western liberal society.” Are people this naive? As I read this quote I heard in my head Ted Striker talking to Dr. Rumack “surely you can’t be serious”.

Paul Girard's avatar

It caught me up also. Made me think of government agencies in our western society completely running NGOs and “university projects” and businesses - in order to infiltrate and do an end-run on the constitution. The NSA and CIA and the entire military/censorship industrial complex has its tentacles throughout our “private” economy.

DaveL's avatar

Don’t call me Shirley.

TeeJae's avatar

Same. And I LOL'd when I read Kontorovich's next sentence about China's “Military-Civilian Fusion” and thought to myself, how's that any different than the U.S.'s Public-Private Partnership program?

Indecisive decider's avatar

I have not yet read McCullough's "The Path Between the Seas", but understand it's an incredible story. Apparently 25k people died building the Canal.

Han's avatar

Newspaper accounts at the time it was completed put the toll at 33,000

Greg Collard's avatar

There were more who died if you include when the French tried in the 1800s. More than 20,000 (I think) died of malaria alone. I kept the death toll and timeline to when America started building it.

DaveL's avatar

…also, yellow fever.

Brandy's avatar

First of all, what an idiot for giving it to them. Idealism is nice in dreams, it's just that it's a dream and has no place in politics. Second, for China to have no control or interest, there sure are a lot of upset people building roads, causing deals to fall through, etc. Of course China is running it, military-civilian style. We can't let this continue in this style. When Trump gets something up his craw for that long, I know he's checked and is likely 99% correct. I base this on past statements and my ability to observe.

Hard to believe how much of our lives are devoted to the theater of the absurd- Hegseth the galavanting Trump sock puppet flexing his muscle with a tattoo of kafir on it - oh what a guy- gravitas, diplomacy, depth of knowledge, respect for sovereign countries- not in evidence here - but the show must go on - what Trump doesn’t understand is that his “reality show” is now playing on the world stage and the world is looking on in horror as we collapse in the arena or coliseum of the 21st century - so sad, so embarrassing, so disrespectful, so unnecessary

- dominating the air waves is the easy part but being the heavy is not a winning role on the world stage any longer- bullying is not what is needed - but clearly Trump and the US deep state were made for each other-saber rattling and insulting rhetoric will continue and destroy any semblance of humanity or reason in our government, see Gaza, Ukraine, Yemen, Syria, Iran, Panama, Lebanon - we the citizens are the real victims of this hubris - all in less than three months - overwhelming the populace via panic, worry, fear of what comes next, decimating the “ middle class” federal employee work force to instill fear for their security and everyone’s security is the new covid inflicting total anxiety on everyone. What a truly hateful man

Karla M LaZier's avatar

Meanwhile USA is weaponizing

the Suez Canal against Europe by creating war with Houthis - the reality of this operation is an attack by USA on the EU which is now having to go around the Suez due to USA interference - the Houthis were only blocking ships destined for Israel- the USA presence in the Red Sea is a covert war against the EU in what appears to be an overt war against the Houthis whose only goal is to support Gaza. Cost of shipping is increasing and insurance by Lloyd’s of London so exorbitant that some liners are foregoing insurance. We want to destroy our NATO countries economies any way we can- destroying Nord stream and forcing Germany and other countries to sanction Russia oil and liquid natural gas creating an energy crisis in Germany and other countries undermining their economies greatly is the goal. War, war, war a USA answer to everything- cowboy culture alive and well - oh

My what could go wrong.

Bryan J. B.'s avatar

I stopped reading this at "kafir"

TeeJae's avatar

Why? Hegseth does indeed have a tattoo of that word (in Arabic) on his right bicep.

Bryan J. B.'s avatar

Ah, thank you for pointing that out! I actually was not aware he had a tattoo that said that.

That being said, I don't really care that he does, but I'll go back and continue reading the comment

MajorSensible's avatar

Because how is it relevant to anything other than as an ad hominem attack?

TeeJae's avatar

Pointing out someone's tattoos, and how they reflect that person's beliefs, is not an ad hominem. In Hegseth's case, it reflects his Islamophobia, which many would consider problematic for a Secretary of State.

MajorSensible's avatar

Please also tell me how alleged islamophobia is relevant to a debate between the US and China over Panama.

TeeJae's avatar

You'd have to ask Karla. It was her comment.

MajorSensible's avatar

First of all, he is SecDef, not SecState.

Secondly, such a tattoo is not islamophobia, it is a badge of defiance adopted among warfighters esp. in the Iraq war. Many Soldiers / Marines wore unofficial "infidel" patches / stickers such as the Major League Infidel logo adapted from Major League Baseball.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/284937976070

TeeJae's avatar

Typo, I meant DefSec. A "badge of defiance"? Against who?

Dean's avatar

Right. Look how well we were doing with John Kerry-style guitar serenading, white guilt acquiescing diplomacy.

Karla M LaZier's avatar

Battle for Zionism 2015 speech by Kerry at UN endorsing the ideology of Zionism-can’t make this up-Rothschild families successful agenda was to create the State now country of Israel for beachhead in Middle East - what could go wrong.

Indecisive decider's avatar

look out!! there is a joooooo behind the tree!!!!

Luna Maximus's avatar

On the one hand, we have done a lot of things wrong since discarding Washington's advice to refrain from entangling alliances etc. On the other, we have pulled Europe's ass from the fire at least twice. The notion that the world, particularly if defined as effete Europeans, is looking on in horror at us finally taking a stand against these nations living off our people, bothers me not in the least.

Karla M LaZier's avatar

We are all

Interconnected - interdependent - so look behind the script - who is really in charge- Rothschilds, Bank of International settlement - read history and discover all wars are fomented by the banks and financiers - City of London, the American financiers profiting from all wars - see the Bush family funding history- DJT, Black Rock, Musk, Peter Theil,

Bill Gates - continual influence of Rockefeller foundation- look behind the curtain - then think about all our losses of humans in every war fighting on behalf of these oligarchs then decide who is the real enemy. Humanity and our children’s children will suffer - governments serve the monied class - we are their servants.

Peacelady's avatar

Thank you for getting to the heart of the global crisis. All wars are indeed banker wars. It’s not sustainable on any level for much longer. A major course correction is needed and soon. I’m not feeling confident we can pull it off in time.

Karla M LaZier's avatar

A course correction

is not what our “leaders”

are seeking they are

from my perspective

In full on panic mode -

Trump

a bull in the China closet

- destructive not

constructive - his fear is palpably played out on the world stage-tantrums as

policy is not an effective

way to govern or build alliances - the Lone Ranger - submit, obey, break all agreements, never play fair, never negotiate, posture before the masses every night on tv and social media, always surround yourself with syncophants, diplomacy - what is that,- civility - what is that - our great leader in crisis mode every day all day - ask yourself what fires this man - it certainly isn’t world peace see Gaza, Syria, Ukraine, Iran, Yemen - our country has no plan other than referring to military industrial complex as the answer to everything- meantime our male population so weakened by Covid vaccine side effects would not qualify for the military in sufficient numbers to make up for the shortfall and our active duty personnel are also being culled by response to Covid vaccine policy in the military. No one thinks ahead or examines any consequences the Id is on display, no rational, critical thinking amongst the ruling class- the ends do not justify the means - the curtain has been pulled back to expose the moral as well as bankrupt system

Peacelady's avatar

No argument from me. Any course correction will come from the bottom up. It’s very late in terms of possibilities. Humanity and other life forms deserve better. All it takes is a small group of psychopaths to fuck up the whole world.

Karla M LaZier's avatar

Peace to you - live in peace

It's unfortunate that Panama has been bullied into allowing it's Belt and Road agreement with China to expire. But at least this sovereign country is loud and clear in it's rejection of the U.S. essentially recolonizing the country. 'We gave it to them and we can take it back' epitomizes the fatuous arrogance of an administration that embodies an moribund empire flailing about in desperation to restore what is lost forever. The clock can't be turned back. There are no strategies that will restore this relic of neocolonial exploitation and bellicose militarism. The more it resists the implacable changes in geopolitical and economic relations, the inexorable shift from West to East, the more the United States looks like a drunk waving a gun around. Pathetic, but for the time being, dangerous.

TeeJae's avatar

"It's unfortunate that Panama has been bullied into allowing it's Belt and Road agreement with China to expire." -- And that right there is what this whole situation is REALLY about. The West is desperately trying to cling to a delusional unipolar/one-world-order fantasy, while the rest of the world is embracing the more sovereignty-respecting, global economy-benefitting multipolar world.
