Now, advocating the accepting of "honest, fair, and well-intentioned( criticism) on the premise that such critics are one's better friends now constitutes "boorish" behavior?

I'd add "for a novice," but I don't want to discourage further efforts. Sage advice from a veteran? Take it slow at the outset--- it's a dangerous business, fraught with both peril and heartbreak. But: practice, practice, practice!
