My Dad was an aeronautical engineer, masters degree etc. On a business trip he sat next to a plumber on the plane. Got to talking wages. Telling me this story, he laughed to find out the plumber made more than he did, even after a 30 yr career. A career that included being one of the head guys in the development of the cruise missile.

It’s true. I’m telling you, it’s a wide open opportunity out here for anyone that enjoys working with tools. You can’t work remotely on a computer; you have to live in a city where there’s people with money. If you can handle that part, there’s endless work. Endless, at good pay, and control over one’s life. What’s control over your own life worth? I propose it’s worth a lot.
By the way Kurt, I called my soon to be 17 year old boy over to have him read your posts. He's a good kid and listens to me. I'm bringing him up to be one of those young guys who shows up ready to learn. Thanks
My pleasure. My prediction, based on 40 years of watching the situation, is that people that understand how houses fit together and "work" and how to fix them will have overwhelming success in their self employment. Understand, just being a "framer" or a grunt working for someone else is not a great path. But, if you work for someone else, get some skills, and pay attention, it's a wide open situation. It's not some kind of cakewalk like winning the IPO lottery or getting cashed out in a start up, but it's endless work with good pay. Endless. Tell your boy to take a couple business classes, don't need anywhere near an MBA, but he needs to understand a few fundamentals. Wish I'd had that. I learned by being stupid.
Thanks again. I can help him out quite a bit. I did a lot of renovation for my Dad with his apartments- interior and exterior. Did it all starting with the deep cleaning ending with moving tenants in. If I wasn't still going out fighting those wildfires, I'd be running a home repair biz myself.
It is pretty amazing- tons of work and little competition and much of that is from hacks. I do good work- don't like coming back to fix my own mistake. Cheers

Ever wonder who's driving those monster luxury RV's to NASCAR races? Plumbers
