They did it without the hysterics of going, "and then if we do THIS, then they'll want THAT and THAT and THAT!!!" The Republican Party of Eisenhower had a top marginal tax rate of 90%. Most people in those days could look at $500 billion dollars and wonder how anyone's human effort actually "earned" $500 billion dollars. They knew, from the robber baron days, that these vast sums were extorted out of the general workforce through unfair bargaining positions. Somehow, people have gone astray from the good ol' values, though.
"They knew" Please. Marginal rates are irrelevant if no one pays them. When the income tax was first created in 1913, 1% of the population paid it. No one paid the 90% rate. But your ilk has continued the slow march toward collectivist tyranny. "MORE!" Is your chant. You're the greediest bunch in the union.
I like for my tax money to go for the things that I think it should be spent on, just like how you like your tax money to go for the things YOU think it should be spent on. I do not like my tax money going for things that YOU think it should be spent on. The general public is supposed to vote for representatives who represent them and set the tax rates. For the last 117 years, these have been progressive tax rates. Sorry if that hurts. Blame South Carolina. They were the first state to pass the 16th amendment.
I have no problem with a "fair share" income tax system if it's based on the will of the people--uninfluenced by big money confusing them about the numbers. Most people support progressive rates. You said above "the income tax is immoral". Fine. Convince the rest of the public of that.
"Most people" , "fair share". Meaningless words used by people without foundational principles.
You want me to convince the rest of the people the system is immoral when a majority of them are getting a subsidy from the system? You cant be that dense? The income system and welfare state are designed to transfer wealth and buy votes, and it works.
If a majority of people supported chattel slavery, would you just throw up your hands and say, "Well, its a democracy!"
We dont live a majority rule system, you do understand that, correct?

You're so typical it hurts.

An income tax of 100% is slavery. The income tax is immoral.
Join me in advocating for its elimination. The government could impose a per capita tax on the state governments of say 3K per year. No more IRS.
But 100% of income going toward a predatory government-sanctioned loan, and the upkeep to generate that income, isn't immoral? Hmmm.
Did I say that? No. Why would you assume I agree with the current scheme? For fucks sake.

Sorry, 107 years.
