We believe that our elections matter, but the reality is that we have a nomenklatura who set an Overton Window and harshly punish any politician who steps outside of it. The purpose of the modern politician is to provide a fiction that the people get a say in their rule.
All of government distracts us with collective outrage and frivolous pleasures. We exist somewhere between Orwell and Huxley, oscillating between our two minutes of hate and a soma-induced stupor, while they do what they will without any accountability. How else can you explain the massive disconnect between the incredible, frothing rage over Ukraine and the nonplussed reaction to our own actions in Yemen, which by any account are far more bloody and inhumane?
