Even if you don't care about sports, it is still a splendid story and parallels your point about arrested maturity/development (children and teenagers in the bodies of "ostensible adults").

IMO - in large part, society is just a grown up version of high school and 'people like Bump' et al are the wanna-be football players & cheerleaders.
