I think that he has become, comfortably numb.

Jay Baccus's avatar

Comfortably dumb.

Damn. It won't mean much to Matt to be trash-talked by Roger Waters. But I would be forever revered among my lowly group of peers if Waters would talk just a little shit about me. Seriously.

Little Humpbacked Horse's avatar

I wouldn't give a fuck. Seriously. Ditto Bruce Springsteen.

Comfortable people are rarely such miserable pricks, in my experience, but yes.

Matt writes: "If on the other hand your metaphysical world is limited to who backs subsidized housing or opposes aid to Israel, life becomes simpler"

This a billion times yes! Life among the morons.

Speaking of Numb and Dumb - after nearly five years of bitter fighting the lights in Kiev are literally going out. And that's not the bad news. Our proxy war against Russia for control of Ukraine's resources has made Ukraine's Nazis the most potent force in this endlessly unhappy nation. Read these and weep.

2019 - "I'm not a loser" declares Zelenski Azov Nazis force public climb down, threaten new president. October 18, 2019. Kiev Post: https://www.kyivpost.com/post/6652

In 2022, western war profiteers no longer able to use the endless war in Afghanistan to drain the public purse, managed to convince us/you that a corrupt thugocracy (Ukraine) should fight and defeat, rather than negotiate with, a much larger thugocracy (Russia) planted on Ukraine's border. This larger thugocracy happens to possess the largest nuclear arsenal in the world (5,600), chemical and biological weapons and a military that sacrificed 26 million of their own people the last time they got in a serious fight.

Those who actually skim the linked articles will understand that the 1,000 Azov's who threatened to kill Zalensky in 2019 have morphed under fire into Hitler's Waffen SS and number 40-80 thousand of Ukraine's most effective battle-hardened troops.

Russia is going to destroy every square inch of eastern Ukraine and more if that's what it takes to destroy every last Nazi on their borders, irrespective of what you, I, Trump, and King Charles might want. The Nazis, btw, have no intention of staying to fight and die. Ukraine's Nazis are the new kingmakers in Ukraine. If we find peace, that peace will have to be according to the terms set by Ukraine's Nazis - as the Nazis warned Zelensky in 2019 "a grenade" might go off.

Trump and Musk are being fitted out to take the fall when the lights in Kiev finally go out for good. And that's if we manage to avoid a full scale nuclear conflict.

Just sayin.

Did you manage to come up with this nonsense yourself, or did they ship it to you frozen straight form Moscow?

Roger Waters is desperate to be relevant. Alas, he’s not. He’s also an idiot asshole.

Roger, needs to bow out now. His interview with Tucker was embarrassing. That dumbass was acting like Iranian banks were superior because ‘they don’t charge interest’ - well you useful idiot, Iranian banks don’t charge interest they just control your cash and charge fees for any purchase they make on your behalf. So Roger, move along now to the trash can of too old has beens like Bruce Springsteen - bugger off.

An antisemite's hatred of Israel is the tail that wags the dog. Iran wants to kill all the Jews in Israel and probably elsewhere. Therefore, the antisemite must find positive things to say about Iran. Further, any apparent negatives - like mass murder of their own people - are really insignificant. It's totally idiotic.

"We were all against the war. Jorma and I just didn't think every song had to be about it."

Jack Casady on the split that undid Jefferson Airplane.

This (proper) point aside, Waters supports the WORST cause in human history, the hatred of the Jewish people (This time in the form of wishing death on the people of Israel by supporting their murderers) He doesn't even try to be nuanced. He is one of the worst human beings on earth today. And he has the gall to attack others. The sooner he is gone from the scene forever the better.

Pairodocs's avatar

He was a raging anti-Semite (complete with Nazi symbols in his live show) long before the current fashionable adoption of Jew hatred by the left. At least he's remained consistent in his vile, hateful message.

There are a lot of excellent, well loved muscians that have passed in the last 10 years, I'm not going to name them; however, I will say that I won't be mourning Rogers passing when the time comes.

Look at how gracefully he has aged. It won't be long now

Roger Waters, one of the more nauseating fools in music.. just because you’re an exceptional musician. Doesn’t mean you have a single clue about the reality of geopolitics.

Matt, keep on rocking the cold. Hard facts! Disregard commentary from a Loon on the Dark side of the Moon...

MK's avatar

"exceptional musician," Roger's writing/lyrics were pretty good, I would argue that well ran dry a long time ago. David Gilmour, on the other hand, has always been incredible and is still on top of his game, and happens to be a pretty nice chap on top of it.

I_C_DeadPeople's avatar

Waters himself is a very average to below average bass player. He should never comment on other musicians chops. On The Wall, many of the bass parts were played by Gilmore.

Waters was an angry asshole as a youth , had a short period where he seemed normal, but is back on the cliff edge.

Little Humpbacked Horse's avatar

Roger Waters is one of the most successful beneficiaries of the recording engineer's arcane talents. He could never even hope to touch the toes of Jaco Pastorius. Even within the electrified trance music realm, Phil Lesh literally ran rings around Roger and still managed a danceable beat.

Little Humpbacked Horse's avatar

Roger waters is an exceptional beneficiary of the recording engineer's arcane art. He's not actually a very good bass player or singer. He just got lucky.

all in all, you're just another prick on the wall

One of the things destroying great art and music in our modern landscape is moronic preaching of ridiculously simplistic gossip politics, which artists like Waters and Morello engage in.

Life, society, and goverance are far more complex, nuanced, and interesting than these types of artists understand. True art can explore these realms. Lazy art lectures based on simplistic sloganeering and platitudes.

Jonathan Miller's avatar

The most interesting characters in literature have always been people with multifaceted identities that contain a mix of good and bad or maybe admirable and loathsome. This is increasingly the theme in Batman / Joker / Bond etc. movies.

Ryan's avatar

Exactly! Good art engages with the complex. Not the simplistic binary crap that is all the pop culture rage these days.

I was always a Gilmoure man anyway.

MK's avatar

For good reason, David has serious chops.

Joshua's avatar

Well, he has the way better voice IMO, and I prefer his guitar style too. Obviously The Wall wouldn’t be what it is without Water’s personal strife, but that strife was his undoing as it so often is.

Suing over the naming rights pretty much sums him up, and now the utter pettiness of bringing up Hetfield’s musicality suggests nothing has changed. Shame really.

Little Humpbacked Horse's avatar

Listen again as an adult. The Wall sucks.

Joshua's avatar

It’s funny you put it that way, because I probably haven’t listened to the entire album in about 25 years, at least. Last time I watched the movie, actually. It’s definitely not their best, but then again, my favorite album is Meddle, which I get shit for every time I mention that opinion.

But really? It “sucks”? Mother is one of my favs. Comfortably numb is beautiful, and Another Brick in the Wall is a fantastic anthem. I’ll grant you the deeper cuts aren’t that great, but I still have to disagree with your generalization. Respectfully.

CrossTieWalker's avatar

They’re totalitarians. They think all of life must be political. Or rather, since politics implies persuasion in a free arena, I’d say that they are simply control freaks who think they know how to run your life and my life better than you and I do.

Jonathan Miller's avatar

He can't even run his own life, I'll be damned if he'll run mine...

Waters' reasoning reflects the nadir of intellectual decline that has been occurring over the past 25-30 years. Namely, you agree with me or you are some kind of beyond the pale offender adorned with one's favorite epithets. The arrant narcissism of those who hold to this point of view represent the antithesis of healthy dialogue. Healthy dialogue seeks understanding, communication, and keeps the door to new learning open, even in the midst of disagreement. It seeks the light, whereas Waters and his ilk only want the light on themselves, ignorant that there is no reason within a thousand light years why light should shine only where he wants it to go. Narcissism of this depth is lower than the Marianas trench.

While I have loved a lot of different music from the 60’s to now just about all the great musicians of all time have shown themselves to be differing versions of self absorbed, highly flawed individuals that while musically talented, their many flaws have shown in many cases to be horrible human beings.

Roger needs to sit down. No matter how much I love Floyd, I grimace almost every time he opens his mouth. Just insufferable. Loved his art, hate his actions for years. He’s just the old man yelling at kids to get off his lawn now
