You have no answer for me. Donald Trump will be the absolute end of democracy and civilization. Since he's sold the shriveled horror that passes for his soul to the fossil fuel industry and will therefore reverse every bit of progress we've made toward ameliorating the ONLY issue that matters -- global warming -- he may be an extinction event for all of humanity and most life on Earth as well.

Fascism is when people blend corporate power and strong centralized government. It looks an awful lot like today's corporate capture in our hyper-militarized economy. Regardless of who is in office.

Trump doesn't like sharing all of that decision-making. His tendency is to try to "make deals" and feel important. He is the farthest thing from a fascist we've had during my lifetime. Heck, even Jimmy Carter started the necessary deregulations to get us here.

And I say that as someone who really liked Carter and who really loathes Trump.

That's not democracy, and it sounds a lot like the guy you hate, boogyman Trump. You call him a "whiner" when he doesn't win or get what he wants. So you're proudly just like him? What are your thoughts on Biden's changing of our historic civil rights law, Title IX on 4/19/24 with the dept. of education? He changed the law without courts, congress or voters involved. That's 100 times worse than the courts giving Roe. back to the states. Imagine if Trump did what Biden just did with another historic civil rights law. You'd call him a dictator. You call me a "bully." How am I a bully? I'm not interested in "owning the libs" but expelling them, since they are no longer liberals, but authoritarians.

YouтАЩd also be ok with him changing the legal definition for an entire group of people? Like trans or gay people and mandating Christian speech, youтАЩd be ok With that? Biden is a man in the late stages of dementia. For his health and dignity he needs to retire. ItтАЩs cruel to allow him to continue to humiliate himself. ItтАЩs elder abuse.

Genuinely, it depends on what the facts are justifying the change. I think the Biden AdministrationтАЩs change here is warranted by the facts, and I donтАЩt trust Trump to appoint anyone who would find actual facts, but if he did, and presented them appropriately, I could be persuaded.

I strongly doubt that. Federal agencies are not elected officials by the people. They have no business changing historic civil rights laws. Biden admin set a dangerous precedent. He could mandate speech so ChristianтАЩs arenтАЩt offended youтАЩd have to say тАЬ praise JesusтАЭ when you spoke to one. Expand full comment
Deb Hill's avatar

Do you think that one windmill or solar farm, would be built if it wasn't for government subsidies. You're more of a whore simping for the climate doomsday religion.

Expand full comment
Karen's avatar

Highways are nothing but subsidies for carmakers and oil companies, that keep us dependent on cars instead of trains. Oil and coal companies get truly epic levels of tax breaks which amount to subsidies. Why not take those out and see how well fossil fuels survive?

Wind and solar farms have one thing that no fossil fuel plant has: the cost of fuel for them is ZERO. They are cheap to build and operate. Subsidies only help them get started, just like any other power plant. Once they get up and running they are almost entirely pure profit. (And yes, I DO know a lot about this industry.)

Expand full comment
Deb Hill's avatar

If the cost is zero, why does your bill go up by half? If it's good for the environment why do the source materials come from places that don't have environmental rules? If it's a crime to kill certain wildlife, why do these companies get special kill permits? When a windmill self destructs and spews oil and diesel over the place, why are there no environmental concerns? When the suns not shining and the wind is not blowing where does the electricity come from? Your whole construct is contrived in fantasy and what-if scenario's. If you where honestly seeking zero emissions, you would be pushing nuclear energy.

Expand full comment
Karen's avatar

I do support nuclear energy, but the rest of your list is easily answered. On the first one, because private corporations get rate increases based on fossil fuel cost increases and charge you for it even when they donтАЩt need it. Buildings kill more wildlife by orders of magnitude than wind turbines do, and turbines spill a tiny fraction of the oil than actual oil wells do. (I live in Texas and I used to work for the Texas Railroad Commission. I know from oil spills.)

All of this is available on the internet if you look at places other than TaibbiтАЩs right wing echo chamber.

Expand full comment
Deb Hill's avatar

So, if they can get killed by other means it's okie dokie. You think the wind and solar corporations are not private corporations. Duh. One thing you didn't address is the massive environmental disasters taking place in third world countries. Or, that's okay because they're poor and stupid. Oh, what echo chamber do you claim?

Expand full comment
Pacificus's avatar

Each wind turbine contains roughly 800,000 pounds of steel produced by fossil fuels, is hauled piece by piece down the highway to the install site by diesel trucks, is maintained by people driving gas/diesel powered trucks, etc. And when, after their roughly 20 year lifespan in which they spent a good deal of the time not turning, these wind turbines are dismantled and hauled away by gas/diesel powered vehicles. It's all for show, Karen--that, and a tax write off.

Admit it, Karen--you've been punked--again. When are you going to wake up?

Expand full comment
Deb Hill's avatar

Wind turbines require 600 to 800 cubic meters of cement for anchor, which exudes CO2 as it cures. The ROE on a wind turbine is 55 years. If it's only going to last 20 years, it's probably time to just cut our losses. Why is it that "looking" like you're doing something for the environment is better than ACTUALLY doing something?

Expand full comment
Karen's avatar

How much steel does an oil field, coal mine, or a refinery use? What fuel do the trucks that haul their products use? In the 20 years a wind turbine is working, how much fossil fuel is necessary to maintain it and can you compare that to what is required to keep a refinery or coal-powered electricity generator would use?

Expand full comment
Drew's avatar

No reputable climate scientist would say "killing the planet."

Also, "whores for the fossil fuel industry" seems offensive to sex workers.

Expand full comment
Jack Gallagher's avatar

So let's review. Carbon emissions have increased dramatically over the last ten years, but surface temperatures have not. As for "killing the planet," none of your "reputable climatologists" actually say that. Their "claim" is that carbon emissions are warming the planet, which is not the same thing at all. But you don't have to put your faith in any particular climatologist. Just look at the four large scale ice core studies done in different parts of the world. They show a long term downtrend in surface temperatures for the last 11,000 years or so (since the end of the last ice age). Long tern trends are more likely to continue than to reverse. But in this case, we may want to consider wanting the long term trend to have reversed, or at least to have taken a sideways pause, because the alternative - a resumption in the long term downtrend, actually might kill the planet.

Expand full comment
Karen's avatar

Civilization depends on a stable agriculture. Crops require a VERY narrow band of temperatures and light hours which global warming is destroying. Crop yields have been falling for 25 years. Pests and crop diseases love the increased temperatures. Fossil fuels are guaranteeing the end of civilization within 50 years.

We've long been growing more than enough food to feed everyone. There's never been an overpopulation problem. There has just been human-created scarcity because scarcity drives profits.

Expand full comment

The moving is a REAL problem though, especially for orchard crops. Pollinators DONтАЩT move easily while pests and diseases are highly mobile. Keeping things stable is always our best option.

Scarcity absolutely does drive profits and industrial agriculture needs some SERIOUS reforms.
