The US, which now rather blatantly and with only small, ineffective spin, is moving forward on putting in and weaponising the law-fare necessary to move to a more effective police state (I'd argue a fascistic state for many reasons going back to WWII). It needs to rein in speech across all platforms in order to keep people from weighing information counter to state propaganda. As a young man, many years ago, I used to believe--rather naively in hindsight--that we were moving to a better, fairer world. Little did I realize just how far the "deep state" or whatever term you want to give the ruling elite and the institutions its controls to keep it on top, would go in terms of control. Though I know many who read Taibbi are not anti-capitalists or anti-imperialists, I have come to believe that until we overthrow the wealthy cabal that benefits from both of those dystopian ideologies we will have a world where terror reigns. One only need look at how the US--and inspite of the spin by the Western media and governments--just committed a blatant act of terrorism in Russia, once again using the worst kind of people to do its dirty abroad. Their story is thin gruel, and any discerning reader and listener to the spin can easily read the true story through it. This is yet another reason why we need to protect free speech at any cost.

Matt,

Given that this is a phenomenon throughout the western world, do you think it is designed by the Davos crowd? Is there any evidence they came up with this scheme?

I'm sorry, but after this latest sociopathic US foreign policy debacle where the US, hiding behind a cover story that has all the 'cover" capability of a see-thru nightgown, murders Russian civilians, I think that we're being generous when we call the perpetrators of this lunacy "The Deep State."

These Keystone Spooks look more like The Doof State to me.

With dipshits like this running the country's defenses who needs actual enemies?
