I'm with you guys on everything except the Franco adaptation, IMHO. The split screen does not work for me. In fact, it angers me. Also, Franco miscast himself with his Hollywood coif and perfectly fitting clothes. The only character he could have played perfectly in As I Lay Dying is Skeet Macgowan. Haha! Did Faulker coin the term "skeet"?
The Franco adaptation is really controversial among Faulkner lovers, but I personally think it is great. I really pressed Matt to watch it, especially as this book can be very hard to follow on a first read through.

I think the question that Matt is trying to get at: does Faulkner portray these people with affection or contempt? Those seem like the two major registers and he is trying to thread the needle.

Read in high school, loved it. On my list to read again but Odyssey and Crime and Punishment got in the way. Saving this for later...

Faulkner is kind of guilty of the same thing Crane did with Maggie. He knew these people but he wasn't one them -- more of a tourist.
"My mother is a fish" I think that was a quote from Darl, but I read this book too many decades ago to be sure.
