ATW (along with a lot of meditation) is keeping me sane these days.

I'm always happy when you do a Monday show.

Monday Monday, can’t trust that day.

I heard Hunter was showing up to get a pardon with the rest of the turkeys.

Drippy G's avatar

This show has been indispensable, great work!

Spiderbaby's avatar

This should be an interesting turkey day in many homes across Asylum L'America this year.

Immediately following the DNC's bloody curb stomping by Trump, MSNBC had a psychologist on who advised that Trump deranged cult mem...oops....I mean, loyal freedom loving Democrats, should cut all ties with friends & family who "chose hate" by voting for the Donald.

Joy Reid just reiterated that bit of DNC wisdom for her audience of drooling halfwit motherfuckers.

Okay, I'm being kind. Blame it on my holiday spirit.

So, if nothing else, the DNC, in their deranged bid to keep their claws of Trump-doom inserted into their hypnotized cult member's addled craniums, are going to suck the joy out holiday joy for all of the idiots who are dumb enough to believe them.

Yippee!!!

Maybe they'll box up all that confiscated joy & put it in a vault. Saving it up until the Kamala/Walz 2028 Joy Tour Redux begins.

Every day I lose another reason why I shouldn't actually cheer nuclear apocalypse.

BookWench's avatar

I keep trying to tell these goofballs that I didn't vote for hate, I voted for cheaper gas & NO censorship, but they won't listen to me.

Spiderbaby's avatar

It probably shouldn't be surprising that their Death Cult "Love" drips with so much doom & malice.

It reminds me of Biden's "you're going to experience a winter of death & desolation" speech to the unclean & the unvaxxed.

For a party of inclusion they sure exclude a huge chunk of us.

Michelle Dostie's avatar

That was horrifying coming from a President. Now I think he needs to be 25th with the Speaker of the House managing the nation.

DaveL's avatar

We have no idea who is actually running things. People keep saying Obama, and it looks like his style, but no one has actually produced hard evidence for that.

rtj's avatar

President of the United States of Love.

DaveL's avatar

The Ministry of Love.

Spiderbaby's avatar

More like The Ministry Of Love Hate Love.

"I tried to love you; I thought I could

I tried to own you; I thought I would

I want to peel the skin from your face

Before the real you lays to waste"

Susan Steffner's avatar

Sounds like nuclear Winter....

@CLJ3's avatar

listening to other POV's and some baseline capability of reflection are not a skill set of the MSNBC audience.

Spiderbaby's avatar

I think they're actually shocked that other opinions exist.

When they characterize everyone who disagrees with them as being stupid they tend to look pretty stupid.

Irony is not their strength either.

Biff's avatar

MSM and the Dems have done a convincing job in Americans that the republicans, Trump, are the party of hate. But couldn’t a good argument be made that the Dems are the haters, the party of intolerance for any view that opposes theirs? Trump is a fascist and Hitler wannabe? Trump supports are floating piles of garbage?

DMC's avatar

do you really think it that big a deal outside the twitter(and other social media) sphere? Most people I know have moved on, they got jobs to do lives to lead. Plenty to talk about other than politics.

Spiderbaby's avatar

Probably true. But given the disconnect between what politicians tell us that Americans want & what Americans actually want I'm going to bet that most politicians don't get anywhere near "average" Americans unless forced to by circumstance. But I bet they all look at social media. QAnon is a great example. I've never met a Republican in meat space who even knew what QAnon was, yet it still gets the retread treatment in shoddy "MAGA-heads & their wacky conspiracy theories" articles by shitlib faithful.

DMC's avatar

yeah - I think we are being swayed by videos of deranged people in their cars.

the problem is that this is back business as usual for the pols. the election is over, the consultants will have a very merry xmas with the money they made helping Harris lose and the "trump is hitler" pols are in "well thats politics" mode. the press who went all in with that and traded in their credibility for below congress level ratings (because your congressman can fix a parking ticket so is useful in some way, a journalist is not) are completely effed and screaming at the sky hoping enough people will join them.

Spiderbaby's avatar

Yeah, pretty much.

Social media seems to be, primarily, an anxiety creating machine.

It also seems to be a bot ranch where bots of different persuasions can stick their bot tongues out at each other.

Its level of influence mystifies me since so much of it turns out to be hogwash & bullshit in the end but that's what we've got.

Paul Harper's avatar

That would be Asylum L'Amerique, but on a cheerier note - Trump won, and we're still complaining? Re: apocalypse if - the risks come from accidental launches, not an actual decision to launch. The battlefield casualties now are more needless than ever. Every single life lost, hand blown off, and relative not participating in family holidays is a crime. Some on the "left" (Nation, Democracy Now)are suddenly discovering a new and utterly cynical and self-serving interest in peace in the Ukraine. This silence, selective outrage, active rah-rah has been obscene.

I tasked my students, utterly unaware of Remembrance Day to research and then write in-class essays on this forgotten, twisted memorial. Can't wait to read them.

DarkSkyBest's avatar

Time to assign "All Quiet on the Western Front?"

Paul Harper's avatar

"Storm of Steel" is more to my taste - unvarnished lunacy. One of Hitler's favorites, for real.

Spiderbaby's avatar

Sorry I was using the Jim Morrison version of L'America.

"Come on people, don't you look so down

You know the rain man's coming to town

Change the weather, change your luck

And then he'll teach you, how to, find yourself

L'America"

Paul Harper's avatar

I'm utterly open to creative language use - I just like the lyric twang of "que" at the terminal position. Re-read Fussell last night.

I wish both of you talented and worthy fellows a happy Thursday. I love ATW, and look forward to more incisive reporting, imaginative word usage, intelligent insight, Gypsy intuition and Matt’s indispensable nose for news. “Mainstream Media” as a term should perhaps give way to “Pravda”. It fits.

Sera's avatar

It’s a tough one, but a good name can be powerful. I think it has to express irrelevance and obsolescence.

I suggest something vaguely abusive but familiar: Granny News, Grandad media or, if you’re not into the whole brevity thing, Grandparent’s media.

Tardigrade's avatar

I hope Matt gets back to us if he ever gets a reply back from that woman who "broke" the Tulsi Gabbard story.

Kurt's avatar

Love/Hate relationship with unscheduled ATW, that is, not Friday morning. Love the incisive commentary, but it usually means the world is coming unhinged, or we are verging on WWIII. Can the world just calm down for one week? Can the power-crazed Biden neo-cons lay off the missiles now? Where did they get the idea you can fire long distance satellite-guided missiles into a nuclear power without consequences?

DaveL's avatar

Probably due to a cash-flow problem with the Military Industrial Complex.

For the kicker, we need full commentary on this story, “They taught the rats how to drive”

https://www.hagerty.com/media/news/forget-the-rat-race-these-dudes-just-wanna-cruise/

Your email arrived in my inbox at the same time and both made me grin.

Tardigrade's avatar

The driving rats are adorable. The research shows that they get enjoyment, maybe even joy, from driving their little Teslas, and will intentionally take a longer route to the treat.

Tardigrade's avatar

It was bound to happen. Your video appears to be people that got cars for their pet rats. All I've seen up to this point was the research rats.

I have retired the words "educated" and "education" from my discourse in favor of "credentialed" and "credentials." BTW I have the PhD credential from a famous grad school. It might be part of the reason why I know many people with a credential are not really educated. Except for all the evidence before our eyes.

DaveL's avatar

You don’t have to have a PhD to see the credential is no guarantee of education or ability to reason.

Nathaniel Wilcox's avatar

You're right, and that's why I said "It might be part of the reason..." Up here in the mountains where I live my neighbor Wade (not his real name) is a retired mechanic and I don't think he graduated from high school, but he's quite a bit more educated than most of the people I come across at academic conferences.

Re: Rachel

1) "Manikin" is an accepted spelling. (As is "Mannikin")

2) The bill that became the ACA was a gut and replace similar to the North Carolina bill she complained about. She probably the "brilliant move" used to pass ACA.

Watching ATW Monday edition right now, and you and Walter are talking about how all the 'public faces' of various governments are seemingly 'out to lunch.' Check out the Adam Curtis documentary "HyperNormalisation." This really began in the 1970s, coinciding with the rise of neoliberalism, but it's really ramped up in the last several years.

Spiderbaby's avatar

Curtis is always brutal.

Benevolus's avatar

It’s Rachel Maddow’s hairline

Jala's avatar

Yes! The admiral & maddow are both evil fuckers!

FLGenX's avatar

Walter was on fire and I was laughing my ass off watching his head explode during the Rachel Maddow part “WHAT ABOUT THE DRUNK DENTISTS??!!”

You guys are the best. Thank you!

Jayhawk's avatar

Here is the cognitive dissonance of the current Ukraine-Russia conflict: Putin is so evil, it is possible that he would use nuclear weapons. However, it is advancing a conspiracy theory to worry that we might provoke Putin into a nuclear war.

Tardigrade's avatar

Replace "mainstream media" with "legacy media". Second place goes to "corporate".

Or instead of "legacy", maybe "leftover".

DaveL's avatar

“State-adjacent media” was pretty good, I thought.

Someone during the livestream mentioned “praxis” was a word Ludwig von Mises used (as the root of his “praxeology”). That’s true, but Marx did use it in a similar sense, years earlier, as meaning “human action.” They both used it pretty much in the same sense, but don’t hear that word used much anymore.

Tardigrade's avatar

The trouble with "state-adjacent" is that the government is getting ready to change, so hopefully it won't be so adjacent anymore.

The trouble with "praxis" is that nobody knows what it means, and few will bother to look it up.

Susan Steffner's avatar

I totally agree with you Walter, Rachel Maddow is psychotic and her audience become support canines for her disability...leading into the mountain mists of madness...H.P.Lovecraft as the Sherpa guide.......
