Assange is not now nor has he ever been a journalist or whistleblower. Assange's case has about as much to do with "free speech" as the Nuremberg Trials did with the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Assange conspired with others to hack a U.S. government computer, steal documents from the U.S. government, and dump them on-line to embarrass the U.S. government. With a little help from friends who after the fact very quickly experienced difficulty remembering his name.

And framing the Assange affair as a "free speech" issue does real journalists little good. But things being what they are at the moment that probably is irrelevant and superfluous. His treatment at the hands of various governments has been horrendous, a violation of justice and human rights, and ought to be both locus and focus of any form of protest or defense. His treatment (and reluctance to bring him to trial) ought to illustrate what governments are currently willing or unwilling to do in these types of cases. It's becoming unpleasant out there.
I think there is a key difference between Assange and Snowden, despite the instinct to lump them together. Assange did what he did to embarrass the United States. I get the feeling that he can't stand the US. But Snowden did what he did to show Americans the creepy extent to which the government was actually surveilling them. I think Snowden loved his country and still does. He's a true whistleblower - he gave up everything to do what was right. That's very different from Assange, who simply got caught being an asshole.

I wish he had also mentioned that the medical community, or if he did it skipped by me, were equally culpable in how far they would go to implement Fauci's policies without ever questioning them. A friend, a head nurse in charge of a ventilator unit in a NY hospital contracted Covid, passed it on to her parents who were living with her, and both got it. Her mother died. In retrospect what I think was also a horror was that her mother was sent to an Long Island hospital some 2 hours away and placed on a ventilator. Her daughter, a nurse who was in charge of such a unit was never allowed to see her, never, even though she had recovered from Covid. Her mother died alone, and no doubt wondered why. She was kept on ice for two weeks, since funeral parlors just couldn't handle all the death. The funeral was nothing more then the immediate family viewing her body for an hour. The church service was everyone in separate cars, listening to a priest speak words through a loud speaker as he stood on church steps. His words could barely be heard. A drive to the cemetery was next, but no one, including family could get out of their car, and you just viewed her coffin resting beside it's new home. I know fear is very contagious, more contagious then Covid . I know Covid began to terrify me, but Fauci got a lot of help from institutions that didn't simply react out of fear, but were protecting their own interests, and reinforcing Fauci's fear mongering. Personally I thought Trump was more upbeat about Covid, and tried to tamp down that fear while the democrats stoked them for political reasons,
That's okay, I think they do a lot of things that don't benefit patients, but just play the game so they don't have to worry about repercussions. My friend had Covid antibodies, and wasn't at risk, and neither was her mother at risk from her presence. No rhyme or reason for what they did, and it's her nagging pain that her mother died alone feeling abandoned by her children. Same with AIDS. My brother died of it, and they terrorized us with Fauci lies that claimed it might be much more contagious then first thought. We all suffered from his lies that no doubt he rationalized with better safe then sorry. With a background in science, biology, and a stint in nursing, I have never adopted any sense of glorification for those in this field. From an historical perspective too many long held beliefs in the field are not readily given up and are adopted as if they were some kind of religious belief. Money too, interferes in arriving at truth. They can be very manipulative also. Smoking and lung cancer, but the real bad news about smoking is heart disease, but it just ain't as scary as cancer. Not to forget that too often big companies fund science which is a lousy way of deriving truth. It's like our politicians are funded by corporate America, they're people so said the supreme court. He also supports experiments on animals that are outright cruel. This acceptance starts while your in college as a bio major, as I was. I loved animals, nature and to be honest that was something they really didn't care about. It was a whole lot about killing animals, or using those already dead for dissection, or piling frogs up in the cold room waiting for death. Only a course hear and there on zoology. He's older then me, but things didn't change through decades.

The mainstream American left now reminds me of 7th grade- an environment full of fear and shame acting as a filter that allows for narcissistic sociopaths to bully their way to the top of institutions. While I can agree with the sentiment, Dr. Fauci is not and never was the nation's top medical official. NIH is a government institute that funds and conducts research. NIAID (Dr. Fauci's institute) is one part of NIH. Dr. Fauci presumably has not practiced medicine in a long time and is not an active part of the bodies that normally regulate medical practice. Dr. Fauci was not in any way a public health official. Practice is different from research.
The fact that NIH released a clinical guideline on COVID, or the fact that Dr. Fauci became a public figure who made specific statements about policy, is part of what's so bizarre about this era. He's an administrator, a bureaucrat. His job is to dole out research dollars. Until recently, the idea that someone like him would have any influence on policy or practice outside the walls of NIH was unheard of. How many other people at NIH are public figures? Francis Collins is the only one that would be recognizable to people who aren't in medicine.

Dr. Fauci was indeed a powerful person having his hand on all those research dollars, and there may be all sorts of corruption going on, but the issue I'm raising is this: there's no reason anyone who isn't submitting a grant to NIAID should ever have cared about anything Dr. Fauci said.
Another suggested improvement is to leave aside the window dressing of his public appearances and study and discuss Fauci failing in his actual job. Fauci ran the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Disease, the Institute of the NIH most relevant during COVID-19. Trump tabbed him, Birx, and Redfield to lead responses on the task force overall, but Fauci had a very important role to play as head of the NIAID: the number one thing the NIH needs to do in such an event is find repurposed medicines and treatments that work.
Fauci and Collins came out early and promised NIH funds for what they considered an enlightened strategy, "work hand-in-hand with industry" in funding clinical studies to help fight the pandemic. They got started on co-funding a bunch of work by pharma companies trying to prove their for-profit novel drugs would work on the disease. But one primary role for the NIH has long been exactly the opposite: fund the studies on generic drugs that no for-profit company will sponsor, for exactly that reason. We'll never know if something works or not if there's no profit motive to fund a clinical trial, so the NIH has to step in and fund such trials. They do the same thing for surgeon-invented treatments that are not patentable, such as proving whether bypass surgery is better than using stents in certain cases. Since no central company makes $$$ off of bypass, a public entity like NIH is best to fund the trial.
The problem is that with Fauci and Collins thinking that working closely with industry was "best practice", they totally forgot all of this and failed the country miserably. They ran a set of trials called ACTIV that studied various treatments. ACTIV-I through ACTIV-5, all efforts on different classes of drugs consisting of multiple trials each, all funded things that would make a sponsor company huge profits if the trials worked. But, what Fauci et al forgot to do was to test the things that wouldn't make anyone substantial money, but would simply save tons of lives at very little cost. ACTIV-6 got going slowly and halfheartedly to address the generic drugs in late 2021, but was too little too late.
As a result of this, the US never tested hydroxychloroquine in a systematic way. We never tested other drugs, either. We spent the pandemic arguing about whether some drugs worked, doubting the studies of (perceived "lesser") scientists from other countries because we didn't do the work ourselves, instead of doing it and having clear answers. We benefitted tremendously from the smarter actions of other countries - the UK and NHS actually DID run some studies like this, and the steroid treatments that absolutely transformed the survival rates and treatment of the disease were proven by studies in the UK - while never studied in the US, to our great shame.
Fauci did everything you state he did, and beyond that he probably helped cause the pandemic by purposefully supporting work arounds to achieve effective gain of function research. But this is the thing NO ONE ever talks about, and yet to me it's as plain as the nose on his lying face. It would benefit tremendously from serious investigation by Racket, Public, or Free Press.
My husband and I are in our 60's. We took the advice from our medical doctor and decided to get vaccinated. After my husband's first booster, within a month his heart was failing and he had to have a pacemaker dropped into his chest. He had never had heart trouble before. Thank God he's doing so well now.
I got my COVID vaccine and both boosters. I went on to have 6 bouts of COVID afterwards. My 6th episode was earlier this year. Oh sure, those vaccines really worked, right?
There is no way I would let my husband and I have another COVID vaccine. This virus will be with us forever and herd immunity is the only way to get the virus under control.

What Fauci pulled off , from start to finish are crimes against humanity. There is nothing being done to hold him accountable. South Slope, Brooklyn received 7 inches of rain, which is a lot but should not have created flooding. South Slope is 100 feet above sea level yet just a few blocks from the East River. Should be extremely easy drainage.
NYC's infrastructure (storm system) is outdated and not maintained- filled with litter and debris. The city is one big, poorly managed money pit.
The local news showed flooding in Williamsburg; it may have been the worst flooding in Brooklyn.
The flooding should never have happened. Williamsburg averages about 30 feet higher than the East River it aligns. Should be easy drainage. Most of the storm and water supply infrastructure is outdated, built in the late 1800s.
And too much of the garbage put out on the streets for early morning pickup washes into the storm drains. And this fairly newer concept of salting the winter roads is rotting away the underground infrastructure.
Many parts of Brooklyn are back and trendy- Coney Island, neighborhoods around Prospect Park, etc.
Speaking of which, it's frustrating to see how disgusting Prospect Lake is- thicker and greener than pea soup. A combination of the lake has zero hydrologic groundwater flow, the bottom is encased in glop (decaying leaves) that prevent groundwater flow and the city water supply, treated with phosphates to prevent lead leaching in, eventually drains into the lake. Vaux and Olmsted did design the lake to slow down groundwater with clay encasement, to slow down water from draining, but now there's zero groundwater flow.
It frustrating to see the progressives try to fix the situation. They have no idea what they are doing. Not a clue.
The lake needs to be dredged and the lead pipes in the city need to be replaced, so that phosphates will no longer be used for water treatment.

When Atlas brought in leading epidemiologists Jay Bhattacharya and Martin Kulldorff to meet the President briefly, Trump asked them to sit down and spent 45 minutes listening to them and asking good questions about covid. We were only saved by the fact the internet is in fact much bigger than just Twitter and Facebook and YouTube. I am so thankful for alternative platforms like Substack, and alternative voices like Matt and the many other Substackers who courageously report the truth, in the face of massive cultural and professional pressure. Imagine where we would be if the authoritarians in the media and Washington managed to achieve their openly stated objective of silencing all alternative voices?
...while this was happening — especially early on — we had nobody we could really talk to about it. All the gathering and conversing places were closed (bars and churches especially), while relentless covid propaganda ensnared the vast majority of our family and friends — often to the point that we couldn’t even broach the subject, lest we be banished from a family gathering. Just got back from a vacation with a friend who is in her early 70's, very sweet and easy-going. She did not see me these past years because I was not vaccinated. Assange is not now nor has he ever been a journalist or whistleblower. Assange's case has about as much to do with "free speech" as the Nuremberg Trials did with the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Assange conspired with others to hack a U.S. government computer, steal documents from the U.S. government, and dump them on-line to embarrass the U.S. government. With a little help from friends who after the fact very quickly experienced difficulty remembering his name.

And framing the Assange affair as a "free speech" issue does real journalists little good. But things being what they are at the moment that probably is irrelevant and superfluous. His treatment at the hands of various governments has been horrendous, a violation of justice and human rights, and ought to be both locus and focus of any form of protest or defense. His treatment (and reluctance to bring him to trial) ought to illustrate what governments are currently willing or unwilling to do in these types of cases. It's becoming unpleasant out there.
I think there is a key difference between Assange and Snowden, despite the instinct to lump them together. Assange did what he did to embarrass the United States. I get the feeling that he can't stand the US. But Snowden did what he did to show Americans the creepy extent to which the government was actually surveilling them. I think Snowden loved his country and still does. He's a true whistleblower - he gave up everything to do what was right. That's very different from Assange, who simply got caught being an asshole.

I wish he had also mentioned that the medical community, or if he did it skipped by me, were equally culpable in how far they would go to implement Fauci's policies without ever questioning them. A friend, a head nurse in charge of a ventilator unit in a NY hospital contracted Covid, passed it on to her parents who were living with her, and both got it. Her mother died. In retrospect what I think was also a horror was that her mother was sent to an Long Island hospital some 2 hours away and placed on a ventilator. Her daughter, a nurse who was in charge of such a unit was never allowed to see her, never, even though she had recovered from Covid. Her mother died alone, and no doubt wondered why. She was kept on ice for two weeks, since funeral parlors just couldn't handle all the death. The funeral was nothing more then the immediate family viewing her body for an hour. The church service was everyone in separate cars, listening to a priest speak words through a loud speaker as he stood on church steps. His words could barely be heard. A drive to the cemetery was next, but no one, including family could get out of their car, and you just viewed her coffin resting beside it's new home. I know fear is very contagious, more contagious then Covid . I know Covid began to terrify me, but Fauci got a lot of help from institutions that didn't simply react out of fear, but were protecting their own interests, and reinforcing Fauci's fear mongering. Personally I thought Trump was more upbeat about Covid, and tried to tamp down that fear while the democrats stoked them for political reasons,

That's okay, I think they do a lot of things that don't benefit patients, but just play the game so they don't have to worry about repercussions. My friend had Covid antibodies, and wasn't at risk, and neither was her mother at risk from her presence. No rhyme or reason for what they did, and it's her nagging pain that her mother died alone feeling abandoned by her children. Same with AIDS. My brother died of it, and they terrorized us with Fauci lies that claimed it might be much more contagious then first thought. We all suffered from his lies that no doubt he rationalized with better safe then sorry. He also rationalized his fear mongering in regard to AIDS in that he wasn't making it a disease only of gays and drug users, but anyone could get it and thereby increasing overall concern. He's not a stupid man, but like many academics in positions of power, he clearly lacks wisdom, believing his narrowly-defined health-focus should be the over-riding factor for the decisions of a body politic; the long-term consequences of his actions, as outlined here by Matt, never slowed his rush to fill the role of savior.
With a background in science, biology, and a stint in nursing, I have never adopted any sense of glorification for those in this field. From an historical perspective too many long held beliefs in the field are not readily given up and are adopted as if they were some kind of religious belief. Money too, interferes in arriving at truth. They can be very manipulative also. Smoking and lung cancer, but the real bad news about smoking is heart disease, but it just ain't as scary as cancer. Not to forget that too often big companies fund science which is a lousy way of deriving truth. It's like our politicians are funded by corporate America, they're people so said the supreme court. Wow, and does that breed lies and corruption.

He no doubt rationalizes the many things he says and does that he knows to be wrong. I also hate his support for gain of function, and many scientists are and rightly so. He also supports experiments on animals that are outright cruel. This acceptance starts while your in college as a bio major, as I was. I loved animals, nature and to be honest that was something they really didn't care about. It was a whole lot about killing animals, or using those already dead for dissection, or piling frogs up in the cold room waiting for death. Only a course hear and there on zoology. He's older then me, but things didn't change through decades.

Having worked in this realm, I know the vast majority of writers come from privileged liberal backgrounds and have insurmountable mental obstacles when it comes to writing jokes at the expense of their own politics. The mainstream American left now reminds me of 7th grade- an environment full of fear and shame acting as a filter that allows for narcissistic sociopaths to bully their way to the top of institutions. While I can agree with the sentiment, Dr. Fauci is not and never was the nation's top medical official. NIH is a government institute that funds and conducts research. NIAID (Dr. Fauci's institute) is one part of NIH. Dr. Fauci presumably has not practiced medicine in a long time and is not an active part of the bodies that normally regulate medical practice. Dr. Fauci was not in any way a public health official. Practice is different from research.
The fact that NIH released a clinical guideline on COVID, or the fact that Dr. Fauci became a public figure who made specific statements about policy, is part of what's so bizarre about this era. He's an administrator, a bureaucrat. His job is to dole out research dollars. Until recently, the idea that someone like him would have any influence on policy or practice outside the walls of NIH was unheard of. How many other people at NIH are public figures? Francis Collins is the only one that would be recognizable to people who aren't in medicine.
The lack of boundaries on the power and influence of professional managers is symptomatic of our modern age. Dr. Fauci was indeed a powerful person having his hand on all those research dollars, and there may be all sorts of corruption going on, but the issue I'm raising is this: there's no reason anyone who isn't submitting a grant to NIAID should ever have cared about anything Dr. Fauci said.

Another suggested improvement is to leave aside the window dressing of his public appearances and study and discuss Fauci failing in his actual job. Fauci ran the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Disease, the Institute of the NIH most relevant during COVID-19. Trump tabbed him, Birx, and Redfield to lead responses on the task force overall, but Fauci had a very important role to play as head of the NIAID: the number one thing the NIH needs to do in such an event is find repurposed medicines and treatments that work.
Fauci and Collins came out early and promised NIH funds for what they considered an enlightened strategy, "work hand-in-hand with industry" in funding clinical studies to help fight the pandemic. They got started on co-funding a bunch of work by pharma companies trying to prove their for-profit novel drugs would work on the disease. But one primary role for the NIH has long been exactly the opposite: fund the studies on generic drugs that no for-profit company will sponsor, for exactly that reason. We'll never know if something works or not if there's no profit motive to fund a clinical trial, so the NIH has to step in and fund such trials. They do the same thing for surgeon-invented treatments that are not patentable, such as proving whether bypass surgery is better than using stents in certain cases. Since no central company makes $$$ off of bypass, a public entity like NIH is best to fund the trial.
The problem is that with Fauci and Collins thinking that working closely with industry was "best practice", they totally forgot all of this and failed the country miserably. They ran a set of trials called ACTIV that studied various treatments. ACTIV-I through ACTIV-5, all efforts on different classes of drugs consisting of multiple trials each, all funded things that would make a sponsor company huge profits if the trials worked. But, what Fauci et al forgot to do was to test the things that wouldn't make anyone substantial money, but would simply save tons of lives at very little cost. ACTIV-6 got going slowly and halfheartedly to address the generic drugs in late 2021, but was too little too late.
As a result of this, the US never tested hydroxychloroquine in a systematic way. We never tested other drugs, either. We spent the pandemic arguing about whether some drugs worked, doubting the studies of (perceived "lesser") scientists from other countries because we didn't do the work ourselves, instead of doing it and having clear answers. We benefitted tremendously from the smarter actions of other countries - the UK and NHS actually DID run some studies like this, and the steroid treatments that absolutely transformed the survival rates and treatment of the disease were proven by studies in the UK - while never studied in the US, to our great shame.
Fauci did everything you state he did, and beyond that he probably helped cause the pandemic by purposefully supporting work arounds to achieve effective gain of function research. But this is the thing NO ONE ever talks about, and yet to me it's as plain as the nose on his lying face. It would benefit tremendously from serious investigation by Racket, Public, or Free Press.

My husband and I are in our 60's. We took the advice from our medical doctor and decided to get vaccinated. After my husband's first booster, within a month his heart was failing and he had to have a pacemaker dropped into his chest. He had never had heart trouble before. Thank God he's doing so well now.
I got my COVID vaccine and both boosters. I went on to have 6 bouts of COVID afterwards. My 6th episode was earlier this year. Oh sure, those vaccines really worked, right?
There is no way I would let my husband and I have another COVID vaccine. This virus will be with us forever and herd immunity is the only way to get the virus under control.

I can't help it. One glance and they pop out at me uninvited. This has made me useful as a proofreader (one of my colleagues said I have an "eagle eye"), but it can also be annoying sometimes.

I'm only good at spotting errors of others because I actually see what is written. 50% of my posts have errors which I find later when returning to a thread to see which post is being replied to. South Slope, Brooklyn received 7 inches of rain, which is a lot but should not have created flooding. South Slope is 100 feet above sea level yet just a few blocks from the East River. Should be extremely easy drainage.
NYC's infrastructure (storm system) is outdated and not maintained- filled with litter and debris. The city is one big, poorly managed money pit.

The local news showed flooding in Williamsburg; it may have been the worst flooding in Brooklyn.
The flooding should never have happened. Williamsburg averages about 30 feet higher than the East River it aligns. Should be easy drainage. Most of the storm and water supply infrastructure is outdated, built in the late 1800s.
And too much of the garbage put out on the streets for early morning pickup washes into the storm drains. And this fairly newer concept of salting the winter roads is rotting away the underground infrastructure.

Speaking of which, it's frustrating to see how disgusting Prospect Lake is- thicker and greener than pea soup. A combination of the lake has zero hydrologic groundwater flow, the bottom is encased in glop (decaying leaves) that prevent groundwater flow and the city water supply, treated with phosphates to prevent lead leaching in, eventually drains into the lake. Vaux and Olmsted did design the lake to slow down groundwater with clay encasement, to slow down water from draining, but now there's zero groundwater flow.
It frustrating to see the progressives try to fix the situation. They have no idea what they are doing. Not a clue.
The lake needs to be dredged and the lead pipes in the city need to be replaced, so that phosphates will no longer be used for water treatment.
I am familiar with Brooklyn, grew up there, and although neighborhoods did fall apart for a while it is now on the mend as far as I can see, well certain parts are. Haven't been around Prospect Park for a long time. Lots of interesting history in that one borough, so you would think they would take more of an interest.

Well Turd, not all of his policies were good, especially his choosing to impose sanctions on Venezuela, and overturning the Iran deal? Killing Soleimani with a drone strike was outrageous, but he did get a thumbs up from the democrats. republican cohorts. However to get a better take on Trump and his policies maybe you should examine the policies that preceded him. If you do, one thing will be very clear, no new wars, so millions of people are still alive because of Trump, so lets give him credit where credit is due. Overturning the Iran deal was a good idea because the deal only benefitted Iran. The deal keeping restrictions on Iran was about to end and they weren't living up to it anyway. The deal was a farce that enabled Obama enrich Iran with millions of dollars.
Trump had a lot better ideas on foreign policy than our prior or current presidents.

In fact President Trump was a serious thinker. He LISTENED to people who were honest and could be trusted. His foreign policy was excellent, focused on supporting human rights, and against the worst opponents of human rights, Russia, Iran, and Communist China. He signed the first comprehensive tax reform in thirty years, which reduced taxes for all except the upper class. He called in Scott Atlas from Stanford University to provide input on public health policy, of which Fauci, Birx, et al., had no expertise. When Atlas brought in leading epidemiologists Jay Bhattacharya and Martin Kulldorff to meet the President briefly, Trump asked them to sit down and spent 45 minutes listening to them and asking good questions about covid. Etc.
There were about ten top scientists that tried to get in to talk to him in early 2020. They were rebuffed. He needs to explain that.
When he speaks publically, he doesn't think. I think he did a fine job as president. When he wasn't having to fight with his own party to get something done. I will vote for him again. Even though I can't take his speeches..LOL

There was a brief time, after the truth about COVID began dribbling out, for there to be a reckoning of these monsters with calls for a "truth and reconciliation" process, but it seems to have disappeared almost as fast as it appeared.

This is why Sydney Powell was promoted by Fox and others- her misdirection about "Venezuelan voting machines" and "unleashing the kraken" prevented an essential conversation about mail in ballot harvesting- the real issue.
I assumed that is because it was not discussed on an alphabet nightly news channel, which I haven't watched since 1985. Blessing not to have witnessed Fauci over and over again although I did watch a few “Pence briefings” with DJT sometimes appearing. I had to quit watching because the munchkin and his scarf friend were hypnotic in their presentations. It was like watching something from One Step Beyond, surreal - I couldn’t remember anything either said, like a kindergartner during a teaching moment.
This has been something that has bothered me since the very first day my company sent us all home to work because of the "dangers." Now, you have both R's and D's screaming and pointing at each other claiming the other is a Fascist, authoritarian, totalitarian dictator king wanna-be, and yes, most of them use all of those ideologies rolled into one thinking they are the same. The fact is, they are all puppets, and really only care about their own bank accounts.
This is years of our real government (the unelected bureaucrats sitting in the back halls of Capital Hill and the Military Security complex) finally getting it right. They've paid out who needs paid, and worked their way towards insuring those that meet the mark get elected. I've argued for a LONG time that Donald Trump was the best thing that ever happened to these ghouls. The Trump presidency moved The Deep State from conspiracy theory to full on fact, and they no longer have to hide because the Democrats have embraced them with wide open arms and totally closed minds.
On the other side you have the Republicans who are just a mouth piece spouting off useless nonsense that they either don't believe, won't act on, or get rich from. I'm sure this was said before by more than one person, but I just saw it today for the first time (regrettably I forget where*), and it certainly resonates: the pandemic revealed our political and media classes are dominated by people who would happily have ratted out Anne Frank.
We were only saved by the fact the internet is in fact much bigger than just Twitter and Facebook and YouTube. I am so thankful for alternative platforms like Substack, and alternative voices like Matt and the many other Substackers who courageously report the truth, in the face of massive cultural and professional pressure. Imagine where we would be if the authoritarians in the media and Washington managed to achieve their openly stated objective of silencing all alternative voices?

...while this was happening — especially early on — we had nobody we could really talk to about it. All the gathering and conversing places were closed (bars and churches especially), while relentless covid propaganda ensnared the vast majority of our family and friends — often to the point that we couldn’t even broach the subject, lest we be banished from a family gathering. Of course, this is on top of the blatant censorship of social media platforms that many of us suffered as well.
The main thrust of coronamania has been over for a little while now, but I’m still guessing most of us find ourselves in this corner of Substack because of the decisions made during the covid era. (And wow are there a lot of terrible decisions to choose from……)
Without trying to speak for the community, I’ve received lots of notes and comments discussing the loss of family and friends during the covid years. I feel — and a lot of readers do as well — that the shrinking of that social circle was the worst part of whole ordeal, even now that it’s “over”. How can you really trust somebody who, it turns out, would have ratted out Anne Frank? The covidians want to forget about the whole saga, but it’s not that easy for many of us who were ‘staring down the barrel’, so to speak.
I am thankful for having a group during the lockdown where we spoke freely. It kept us sane.
I tried to have common sense conversations with people I considered friendly. Wearing their dirty bandannas outside was explained as solidarity. I think covid was a utopian moment for some. They got a frisson of belonging to a cause larger than themselves, and weren’t going to let mere common sense interfere. I took it to be stupidity at first, but no. It was worse. Call it self- lobotomy. Thinking is so overrated when you can be part of a movement!

James Lindsay has actually totally misrepresented the actual, historical reality of who the gnostics were. They were ruthlessly suppressed for obvious reasons- because that message empowers individuals at the expense the elites who sit atop the hierarchies of power that like to rule over us. James is an interesting fellow but he's also an old school, hard-core southern Baptist. His take on gnosticism is completely incorrect from an historical point of view. All of the behavior he attributes to gnosticism- self righteousness, morally superiority, hypocrisy, a supposed monopoly on truth- apply much more ac urately to protestants and specifically calvinism. Problem is...that happens to be his religion. And there's the rub. Wokism looks a helluva lot like a materialistic, atheistic, statist version of Calvinism- Lindsay's own religion, but with God removed and government replacing the church. If you find yourself endlessly obsessing over an enemy, you might just double check to see if your shadow boxing a reflection of yourself. In Lindsay's case, he got around that by projecting all of those attributes on to his religion's age old foe- heretical thinking. Also known as...heterodoxy. But as we all know, the cult of social justice, aka wokeism, is anything but heterodoxical. It's the very definition of orthodoxy, which is why James Lindsay can't bring himself to admit how much of himself he sees in that reflection. Just my two cents tho. Just got back from a vacation with a friend who is in her early 70's, very sweet and easy-going. She did not see me these past years because I was not vaccinated. Became clearly annoyed when I said they lied about the vaccines effectiveness and cut short any discussion. "We'll just have to agree to disagree." Not sure why she felt comfortable to be around me now, but my point is that many people are so invested in the narrative and eager to just "move on" that I doubt in my lifetime there will be any accountability for the lies and smears heaped upon honorable men like Dr. Bhattacharya. Just too many complicit in the false narrative and cover-ups and too many citizens that enabled them.
it is very difficult for just about everyone to admit they were duped and that other people's lies were the invisible puppet strings that guided their thoughts and actions. once people acquire a "belief", however spurious, it becomes like a precious possession and is very hard to let it go, esp if there will be a public ego bruise involved.

the social media age combines a level of tribalism that is similar to what happens to people during civil wars with a full-spectrum propaganda assault that is not only intended to bombard you with lies, but to bombard you with fear, guilt and shame if you even raise a quibble (only bigots disagree! your questions are harming the marginalized!)—this makes almost everyone deranged and primed to attack an opponent, and also makes it almost impossible to maintain a serene mind with some level of clarity, which is the sine qua non of thinking. it's a daily challenge for all of us!
