There is also the fact that a lot of the Black community leaders at the time were pushing for harsh criminal penalties. You can bet that they do not want anyone remembering their role in the whole thing. On a side note anyone remember the "super predator" thing?

As I learned (painfully so during the 2016 POTUS election cycle) any criticism of Hillary's record -regardless of its basis in facts, data, history, and empiricism- is sexism/misogyny, and proof that you are a Russian Bot.

You may laugh, but I've contemplated chucking it all here and moving to eastern Europe. I do have family here (and there), but it's not quite easy to walk away. Establishing a home and work are not a flip of the light switch kinds of actions. But the levels of psychopathy in politics and media are making the US so toxic. The degree of public safety (I live in CA) has gone down considerably. What becomes the point of staying? To be "re-educated" or show trialed? Will I be able to tell the difference between "we have time to leave" and "we're screwed".

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think things are so far gone that it's time to pack up and leave the country. I do however suggest you consider leaving California if at all possible. As a previous resident of CA myself, I can tell you that I experienced an immediate and substantial increase in my standard of living upon leaving. Real estate is much, much cheaper, I don't spend hours in traffic, I pay less taxes for better services, and don't have to deal with crime and crazies in the street everywhere I go. Homelessness is much less of a problem since real estate is much more affordable. The list goes on and on.

Where did you go to, if I might ask?

Out of this list of top 10 states people are moving to I've lived in OR, AZ, FL and NC. Also did a few years in CO though that's surprisingly not on the list I linked.

If you love the outdoors then CO and OR are nice, but both seem to be going the way of CA politically. Stay away from Portland if you go to OR. I'm not into drugs and the pot culture in CO put me off, but oh man the mountains are nice, and having world class skiing within driving distance is great. FL is nice if you're reasonably wealthy but pretty crowded. This is just a personal preference, but Florida is too hot for me. I feel that AZ and NC are good choices for most middle class people provided they can find jobs in their area of expertise.

Oh yeah. It's evident in retrospect that les Clintones learned from Lee Atwater's Willie Horton bag of tricks and were trying to out-racist GHWB. And it worked! Remember Bill going after Sister Souljah?

I'm beginning to think one of the main things that sets Tabbi and Greenwald readers apart is functional long term memory.

...I hate to be a "kids get off my lawn" type, but I do observe that MT and GG are Of a Certain Age, and this isn't their first rodeo. I presume that much of their readership is as well.

My long-term memory is pretty much the only thing I have going for me; my short-term memory has utterly degenerated. Every day brings some new and delightful variant of "Wait, why am I outside and not wearing pants?"

"Wait, why am I outside and not wearing pants?"

OMG! TOO FUNNY! I was born sometime before 1960, so I am both laughing and crying at your exclamation of strikingly powerful and painful truth. I am still, thankfully, gainfully employed, seeing as my employer has seen fit to excise so many of my peers, thereby creating a "knowledge gap" and making old farts like me, nearly indispensable. Soon, I hope to attain an adjunct position, teaching Mathematics and EET, at my local JC, where I can warp young, impressionable minds over to my way of thinking (i.e. question all authority; never forget that Bourbon is a "food group" and that the "status quo" is for cowards and suckers).

It's like a cruel joke that we're the butt of.

"I know I saw it the other day... now WHERE DID I LEAVE IT???"

That's my favorite game to play. Sure, that ladder was in here, but was it last week, last month or three years ago?

I don't fucking know.

If you're only losing things "the other day," you're still not doing too bad. I can lose something in 30 seconds flat.
