I look at it this way. I've spent my entire adult life in the two reddest states in the country, Wyoming and Utah, as a left-leaning independent. In my entire adult life, my presidential vote has *never mattered* because of the winner-take-all EC system. The two major parties have gamed the system to maintain their power. Sure, it wouldn't've made any difference if I voted or not.
However, things might be changing a little bit. This year, there may be alternative candidates, including RFK Junior, who could be getting some traction. Think about one state, say, Colorado. If enough people in Colorado vote for RFK junior, he could actually carry that state. Therefore, it's in the best interest of the major parties to keep making sure people believe that such a protest vote can't possibly matter.
Polls show 70% of the electorate want a choice other than those served up by the two major parties. There were enough disgruntled people in 2016 to elect an outsider like Donald Trump, which was a big surprise to pretty much everybody, even Donald Trump. I think the amount of disgruntlement has only increased since then. The people should let their disgruntlement out, let it fly free, and vote on it.
