His guards took care of the first attempt, and Trotsky assaulted and captured Mercador after the second, breaking Mercador's hand in the process, before his bodyguards nearly beat him to death before Trotsky stopped them. He then remanded Mercador for interrogation and went to the hospital for the head wound.
A lot of Trosky's time before and during the glorious revolution was in prison or on the run.
