I think it is a paradox for sure. Amazon is highly successful but it comes with a terrible cost too--hidden externalities. In theory a centralized system could deal effectively with the problems--if there was the will. But under capitalism there is no reason to be concerned with externalities. Profit is the only objective.

Amazon is only successful if your measure of success is growth and monopoly. It is otherwise regarded pretty widely as a huge disaster.
