I happened several years before 2019, and it is not controlled just by "MI6"; it is more generally a platform for neoliberal/neocon wokeism, see the campaign since 2015 against Jeremy Corbyn. Clearly the editor Katharine Viner (appointed in 2015) was a big and seemingly enthusiastic (especially as to "women's issues" wokeism) factor in the change, but her predecessor seemed to have been under pressure for some time.
