Sad to see this spectacle —- Walt and Matt had a chance to bring the temperature down and instead they doubled down and beat a dead horse by dissecting cherry-picked posts of people who had been fired for their comments. How exactly is that helpful? And why not acknowledge that there was near unanimous condemnation on the Right and Left of Kirk’s murder? And Walt sounding like he’s had one too many, is now ranting about censoring the press and spinning half-baked conspiracy theories about Gork while Taibbi nods along or remains silent.
I see your point. I have made the same point referencing different people. I haven’t really seen what you are talking about with these two specifically, but I have seen it a lot in the wake of Kirk’s murder. I have noticed the relative excusing and lack of discussion regarding the burgeoning speech threats this administration is posing currently compared to the prior administration’s. I’m thinking it is because the censorship is primarily in favor of Israel which appears to be a sacred cow for both Matt and Walter. That being said I do appreciate a lot of work both have done over the years, however, it is remarkably hypocritical.
"Israel which appears to be a sacred cow for both Matt and Walter"
=> perhaps you have not seen the 2 editions of ATW that I saw, where M&W discussed their reasons for not covering ME/Israel/Gaza, IMO they were very articulate & cogent, and I did not sense "sacred cow" in their attitude about Israel. As they suggested most recently (last week?), one can go elsewhere for deep and informed coverage of that specific subject.
These are two people who have deep knowledge about several things, and it's a sign of healthy humility that they don't wade in on a very complex subject when they know they can't offer the background and insight that they add to the subjects that they do discuss.
Sorry, Walter is a lost cause, but Matt knows plenty about ME/Israel/Gaza & the censorship being imposed. He hosted Useful Idiots for some time with Katie Halper, who is very up-to-date on Israel & Gaza, but Katie's antizionism & left orientation was too much for Matt to handle. He's far more comfortable with Walter.
What is more important than the continuing manipulation of our media and government by Israel and its wealthy supporters, and the penalties paid by reporters who dare to stray from the enforced narratives?
Matt also avoided #Russiagate & Biden corruption in Ukraine for many years. Are you going to argue he was not equipped to take on that subject either? He spent years in Russia and knew the history of US involvement there post-Soviet Union. It seems he was more concerned about losing his standing with his readership. He saw what happened to Aaron Maté and others who bravely reported the truth.
Walter displays humility? LOL. He and Matt are just projecting on every criticism they expressed on this podcast.
My comment was about covering the ME geopolitical situation.
US censorship about the ME is a different subject, and on that I generally agree with you -- but most of the comments here criticizing M&W re ME are about Israel & US gov. action/policy there, not wrt US censorship.
Personally, I dont expect M&W to cover every single subject, and they already take risks in covering what they do they way they do. I dont see this site as a one-stop shop for all things news, media, and policy.
The censorship surrounding ME coverage & the false propaganda that permeates the mainstream media on the subject of the ME are integral and essential component of the current geopolitical situation.
I don't accept that spending hours ranting about one-off social media postings are more important. We are even learning without comment from M&W to what extent Kirk himself was being pressured by pro-Israeli contributors and Bibi himself.
More than 245 journalists in Gaza have been murdered in the last two years with US government approval. Not worth discussing?
What risks are M&W taking above what so many other podcasters & reporters are doing? Sorry, not buying it (or not paying for it any longer)!
I think Matt and Walter perhaps unintentionally convinced me Charlie Kirk’s actual statements were problematic. The fact that in Kirk’s mind 3 black women, who were allegedly chosen based on affirmative action (which he justifies by pointing out that Michelle Obama acknowledged affirmative action’s help), took away jobs from white candidates is delisokw k hip
Yes, completely lost on these two aging, increasingly bitter, white men that Kirk denigrated and smeared 4 black women, at least 3 held in high regard by other black women. The true quote is worse than the misquote. All the women went on to earn either BAs or graduate degrees, while Kirk lasted one semester at a mediocre college. These black women didn't need Affirmative Action to be awarded those degrees. The internet is full of clips showing Kirk's unmistakable penchant for nasty racist remarks. But Matt & Walter completely whitewash him, while attacking the last remaining black on WaPo's Editorial Board. I dare Matt to bring on Ta-Nehisi Coates and debate these issues with him. I'm so glad my subscription runs out tomorrow for Useless Whiners, aka Racket News.
Cox is the problem? The one guy trying to lower the heat? I personally like Kirk even if I disagree with him, but the sheer amount of cope that Walter especially provides for Trump is just disgusting. Trump and his admin are literally talking about prosecuting hate speech…
Me too. I supported Matt's independence since he started Useful Idiots, to which I still subscribe. To be honest it is better without him. Tomorrow is my last day as a subscriber of Racket News. Listening to him and Walter for two hours or even 30 minutes is unbearable.
No, I wasn't coerced into listening to ATW, but I was coerced into a 1-year subscription with no possibility of a refund due to early cancellation. And then my credit card was dinged for another year without warning. Since I didn't think I was getting my money's worth & couldn't get my money back, I decided to take advantage of my remaining subscription to critique ATW in the comments. This time I marked on my calendar when to cancel. After today, you won't be hearing from me.
No I hadn't read Michelle Obama's senior Princeton thesis, but thanks for bringing it to my attention. Was an interesting subject in 1985.
If you are actually interested in the thinking at the time, you might read my cousin's book, written with G. William Domhoff, "Blacks in the White Establishment: A Study of Race and Class in America (1981)" Nothing quite turned out as expected, and actually Michelle was ahead of the curve in understanding what the trends would be. Domhoff & Zweigenhaft's "Diversity in the Power Elite: Ironies and Unfilled Promises" (3rd Edition, 2018) brings us up to date.
I hope not. These guys listen to comments. I am all out on Trump as well. Flag burning laws, Bondi does not understand you can’t prosecute hate speech, another clown show administration. Frankly, I think Bessent is okay. Trump has good financial people in place. He gets business not governing. Last guy at one time understood governing, not business. (Biden was out to lunch and disgraced entire DNC at end. I doubt they recover in my lifetime). I hope we get some truly new people in mix for 2028 and new ideas on both sides.
The "misquote" you opened with was truly not exactly rendered, but when Charlie said that 4 prominent and successful black women don't have brainpower, since they are on top that suggests to me that he MEANS no black women do or most or many of them don't. And then concluding with the idea that they stole positions from whites: God I hope this isn't considered "moderate". He's not a nice person. He shouldn't be shot, but he's pretty much a jerk. Society decided to give black folks a special break for a while, to try to help. We all take advantage of opportunities. Why shouldn't they have?
Matt: What do you think your hero Hunter would say?
I agree completely, they’ve tried to wash the stink off of this comment, but when Kirk says these black women had to ‘steal it’ from some deserving white person that is pretty damning. If it was such an innocuous comment, why are they ‘stealing it׳ and why from a white person? It’s also pretty telling that Taibbi thinks a lawsuit would prevail against someone drawing those conclusions. This from a supposed champion of free speech.
There are plenty of other disturbing comments by Kirk which explain why many are not celebrating his life, such as what you find on this clip:
I’d love to see such a debate, but I don’t see it happening. Lately, when Matt and Walt venture out of their bubble it doesn’t end well for them (Mehdi Hasan and Bill Maher).
I checked out the Mehdi Hassan video and I wasn't impressed. Clearly Twitter was censoring at the behest of the Biden admin, in and out of power. Mehdi was just carping around the edges.
I tried to find Maher but I couldn't get the original. The Useful Idiots cut, which I would think would be edited to favor Maher, was underwhelming.
In both these cases it seems like the left is trying to defuse a clear loss for them.
Now I often like Maher. I am much more disappointed in Matt than I am Maher. I see much more integrity in Maher than in Taibbi. Which is sad. When Taibbi is righteous he is beautiful. But we lost him. I suspect he is dependent on the money from his audience and he is striving to preserve them. While Maher just says what he believes even if it will hurt his career.
But why did Taibbi and I get attracted to the right in the first place? I was a two time Obama voter and I once truly did hope. But now Obama is just another multimillionaire ex-politician.
But what happened? In my view, the Left saw that their issues were disappearing. Conservatives were accepting gay folk. Things were generally getting better for blacks. So they decided to apply a magnifying glass to the remaining problems - like police racism, a totally real thing, and not from statistical policing as Matt suggests - and ignore the progress. They knew that it would be divisive, and it it was. So it got them a short term bump, but in the long run people can't be forced to evolve, so there was an immense backlash and now we have an assh*le like Trump with a lot of supporters who have been totally alienated from racial and gender issues. The Left didn't help.
Bruce, This is a great article. Very specific. I haven't had a great impression of Coates, but I have no issue with this article. Perhaps my impression is false. I would love to see Coates debate Matt and Walter, especially if Coates maintains the tenor of this article.
I could never watch Kirk because the things he said disturbed me so much. He was a good debater, but a shallow thinker. Winning a debate doesn't mean you're right.
"Words are not violence, nor are they powerless." - That is a powerful observation.
I was a Trump supporter. I understood him as a defender of the Constitution, small government and the little guy: I was wrong. But the opposition is useless: They seem so intent on attacking that they aren't building. I am inclined to think they are just fundraising and preserving their personal power, rather than actually trying to help anybody.
And when I talk to Democrats about what we can do now they can only attack me for my past support of Trump. Well, they can't win if they don't allow people to change sides.
I think both sides are insane and fail to see the obvious. They critique the opposition for something and then proceed to do it themselves.
“Holmes and Watson are on a camping trip. In the middle of the night Holmes wakes up and gives Dr. Watson a nudge. "Watson" he says, "look up in the sky and tell me what you see."
"I see millions of stars, Holmes," says Watson.
"And what do you conclude from that, Watson?"
Watson thinks for a moment. "Well," he says, "astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Meterologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Theologically, I see that God is all-powerful, and we are small and insignficant. Uh, what does it tell you, Holmes?"
I’m just now watching this episode. Regarding the commentary about Gov. Cox, something that has been nagging me since 9/10/25 that Walter is orbiting around near the 1:40 mark is the fact that following Butler, there aren’t armed guards on all the rooftops, or at least someone watching the rooftops. How the fuck is that possible for a public event featuring a politically provocative figure? I can say without a doubt that CK’s assassination is by far the most significant of my lifetime and I’m almost 50. I’m devastated.
I think that Matt should do an in-depth investigation into this murder. The text messages they are reporting don't sound like they were written by a kid today. And they're so tidy with all the information laid out. We need good investigative journalists on this case!
Fascinating that Matt & Walt, these two supposed free speech absolutists are now non too subtly blaming the Kirk assassination on speech, and they are actually positing that a crackdown would not be unreasonable. The mask has come off, and Matt & Walt are revealed as frauds.
Around ~30m - that leftists / Democrats were recently the micro aggression party. Just recently, they didn’t mind that they weren’t macho men.
But recall that in the last year polling has shown that (1) Dems were doing bad with young men AND (2) the message that resonates with them is “fight fight fight.”
Both a possible explanation and a sign of the times. Very sad. May God bring the affected families comfort ❤️
I loathe those comments by Kirk. How do we know the people who would have been hired instead of the three black women would have been white? Frankly, without affirmative action, if Universities just picked kids based on test scores, predominantly Asian Americans would likely be in majority at many Universities. The actual Kirk. quotes were arguably racist. I don’t like these comments at all. Those ignorant comments do NOT warrant an execution. However, they do warrant a discussion. I think the fact that DNC media can’t do something as basic as correctly printing a quote just reveals how bad DNC media has become. I have NO RESPECT FOR NYT and other allegedly respected papers that can’t even copy a quote correctly on paper, particularly since an intelligent person would argue what I just did: How do you know those 3 black women would not have been replaced by someone besides a white person? Completely illogical and certainly borderline racist.
Matt and Walter, please use your platform to encourage open debate on all issues. The elites have managed to avoid debating by insisting that all their issues are givens. Thanks for your consideration.
Walter is dead accurate protecting space that is “free speech” space vs the FCC space which is regulated space. That point needs to be driven home as it appears 4 out of 5 Americans seem to think these networks can program pornography and depravity that does not work in the public’s best interest.
When there is a murder everyone with a potential motive must be considered a suspect . In this case would there be investigative will , enough objectivity and political freedom to explore nation state actors who stand to gain a great deal from this murder? I’m not sure why Walter could not say the holy name that could not be uttered, or to pretend like this is that far fetched. Most people sense that this whole thing stinks.

Apparently we don't have the same type of Facebook friends. I saw people making snide remarks if not essentially saying he deserved it
I'm not sure what your point is, that people make snide remarks on FB? And what else is new? And what does that prove?
I see your point. I have made the same point referencing different people. A caricature of all the work on this site, esp wrt to its archive of feet-on-the-ground texts from Taibbi.
I suggest you start your own substack, as you have conviction and therefore sufficient expertise, I'm sure. Do you have the cajones ?
Where have you seen the "near unanimous condemnation" of Kirk's murder on the left? Please direct me to some sources.
Bernie Sanders, Gavin Newsome, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, The NYT, The Guardian. CNN, MSNBC, etc. etc. etc.

They may listen, but they rarely respond. Less and less from Matt. See if they respond to all the criticisms on this thread.
Might be both soulless and evil, but it’s still free speech. You get it all or you get none, that was literally Charlie Kirk’s base message
The "misquote" you opened with was truly not exactly rendered, but when Charlie said that 4 prominent and successful black women don't have brainpower, since they are on top that suggests to me that he MEANS no black women do or most or many of them don't. Perhaps all of this hate Inc. stuff is to keep us from discussing real issues the U.S. faces.
1. Healthcare hyperinflation, worse outcomes than other first world nations
2. Bankrupt cities due to either corruption or defined benefit pensions (leading to #1 healthcare hyperinflation), a combination of both.
3. The neuro-drugging and/or sterilization of young kids via the mental health industrial complex
4. The deficit and spending keeps climbing
5. Rent seeking as opposed to wealth building
That’s a start, but yawn boring non click bait topics

Did you see the articles in WSJ & others that banning commercials is a form of free speech???
Matt and Walter, please use your platform to encourage open debate on all issues. The elites have managed to avoid debating by insisting that all their issues are givens. Thanks for your consideration.
Walter is dead accurate protecting space that is “free speech” space vs the FCC space which is regulated space. That point needs to be driven home as it appears 4 out of 5 Americans seem to think these networks can program pornography and depravity that does not work in the public’s best interest.
When there is a murder everyone with a potential motive must be considered a suspect . I’m not sure why Walter could not say the holy name that could not be uttered, or to pretend like this is that far fetched. Most people sense that this whole thing stinks.
