An old tweet spurs a defense of Christopher Columbus and debate over Mamdani policy proposals; outraged Colbert supporters protest his firing and Trump
Protesting is now almost exclusively a left thing. That’s also a big reason why it’s pointless now. Imagine how much of a nobody celebrity worshipper you have to be to protest the cancellation of a show that probably lost more money than it ever made.
But, but, but, I have a parasocial relationship with Stephen Colbert!
He always says those zingers I wish I could think of when racist MAGAts micro-aggress me by demanding whole milk in their lattes! If they only knew I almost graduated with a degree in critical gender hermeneutics
Milk is white, and I have the specialized training needed to know what "whole milk" is a dog whistle for!
I can't wait until Hillary locks them all up in reeducation camps and makes them pay off my student loans!
My points were that protesting has always been a left thing and you have no idea about the history of your own country. I hope that's spelled out clearly enough for your right-rotted brain because I'm done with this thread.
Help me to understand how a network canceling a show that was losing money and viewership is censorship somehow. From my understanding, Colbert is certainly able to speak his mind and will probably go on and do a podcast or something. The left is so divorced from reality that common non political occurrences are now seen through this totally warped and distorted lens as civilization ending. Meanwhile, while 1984 style censorship was actually occurring during the Biden administration, it was ho hum.
Well said Jen. The left has become so far removed from reality that they have lost all sense of logical thought. They’ve left thinking for themselves behind, totally abandoned it. They just believe things based on their tribal affiliation, that’s as far as they go, not bothering to give some actual thought to what it is they are saying, protesting, or believing.
Sasha Stone, in her analysis of the Colbert situation on Substack (https://sashastone.substack.com/p/the-sultans-of-cringe-who-killed), had the best line: "Colbert was funny once, back when he played a pompous TV host who took himself too seriously. Not so funny when he became one."
They are just like the Freedom Riders, but without the danger. Or risk. Or inconvenience. Or serious purpose. But other than those things, completely identical freedom fighters!
Protests by the left are ruining beautiful green lawns or roads. I live close to Steamboat Springs, CO and I never saw protests like I do now ruining a tourist town. The Dems have partnered with Indivisible.org and protest with manufactured signs that are flat out fake news. The NGOs paying these protesters or providing the fake signage must be investigated. So tired of the bogus protests!
Oh the humanity! Those tore-up lawns and shrubbery! How will we ever survive that?
Unlike the "fake news" of people being snatched off the streets, no court date, then shoved into a plane and deported--to fucking DJIBOUTI--or Sudan, or El Salvador into a hellhole of a prison. (One person, wrongly sent there, managed to get out and back here: "Whoops, sorry. Sorry we grabbed the wrong person.")
Plus all the other shit that Trump is getting away with. Oh, and BTW, how do you like his tariffs? You won't mind paying a lot more for stuff, I take it?
What’s the difference between all the deportations prior to Trump and the current ones? They grabbed people off the street in huge numbers under Obama. I’m honestly asking. I don’t like the way Trump talks, but there is a level of disrespect for breaking into a country and especially so if they are committing crimes. Needless to say, given the massive NGO assistance and corporate exploitation of both migrants and Americans, I hardly think the migrants are the source of the problem in this story.
Yes, you're not wrong. Even Biden's immigration policy was largely a continuation of Trump I's. And of course the O'Bomber was no angel in this regard either.
"Disrespect for breaking into a country"? Meh. People have been doing that since forever and will continue doing so. Some have damn good reasons for escaping intolerable situations (repressive regimes, economic disaster). Others are "economic refugees": so fucking what? Humans tend to want to improve their lot in life, and can hardly be blamed for wanting that.
Latinos around the southern border have a saying:
"We didn't cross the border; the border crossed us."
But you're right, immigrants get far too much blame for the ills of the USA.
what is Trump getting away with? that has you knotted up. Everything admin/he is doing is public knowledge and seemingly legal, despite your and others protestations. You may not like what he is doing but you are in a very small minority.
Garcia is one of a handful of deport errors, only disputed by local judges who have no actual authority. If there were hundreds or thousands of these errors, you might have a point. Dealing with 20million illegals necessitates some errors IMO.
You’d be guessing wrong George, if you think that’s who I was talking about. I’m talking about the affluent white kids who have been indoctrinated into believing that socialism is a good thing and that it works if you just do it right. They are the Mamdani voters.
Shit, even "you win" is a bad outcome. Just look at the aftermath of what we ('Muricans) call "the Civil War", as if ours was the only such war worth mentioning.
The simmering resentment kept alive in the defeated South had terrible consequences, some of which are biting us in the ass even today.
"...what we ('Muricans) call "the Civil War", as if ours was the only such war worth mentioning." It's the only one that has occurred in The United States of America, and repeating "American" before "Civil War" every time would be silly and inefficient. Stop being pedantic, admit you hate anyone you perceive to be not as smart as yourself, and move on.
"The simmering resentment kept alive in the defeated South had terrible consequences, some of which are biting us in the ass even today."
Gee, ya think? Well thankfully it's not because of people who still refer to them as 'Muricans / treat them all like ignorant hicks over 100 years later, instead of actually giving a shit or trying to understand the situations in the South. Or any other actually useful thing.
Protesting is now almost exclusively a left thing. That’s also a big reason why it’s pointless now. Imagine how much of a nobody celebrity worshipper you have to be to protest the cancellation of a show that probably lost more money than it ever made.
Whenever I see protestors, I think of this line from caddyshack.
https://youtu.be/4R1opUW7Sh8?si=38nnrexX5U5LSo2_
The wisdom conveyed in CaddyShack (which I saw in the theater, thank you very much) has been a lifelong comfort.
I think this place is restricted, Wang, so don't tell 'em you're Jewish, okay? Fine.
You gonna eat your fat?
I loathed that character. Hilarious, and good call!
But, but, but, I have a parasocial relationship with Stephen Colbert!

I don’t understand activist language but I take your point 😂
Nothing better to do I guess
I wonder how much they get paid?
Less now.
Colbert only has so much ready cash
> Protesting is now almost exclusively a left thing.
Are you quoting Emma Goldman?
Perhaps but not intentionally.
No shit, Sherlock.
My points were that protesting has always been a left thing and you have no idea about the history of your own country. I hope that's spelled out clearly enough for your right-rotted brain because I'm done with this thread.
Imagine not realizing that 1984 is already their reality.
And self-inflicted, no less.
That was my thought too, "NOW they're worried about living in 1984??"
I'm pretty sure most of these poor people want to live in 1984, but only if "their side" gets to be Big Brother. They clearly missed the entire point of the novel, as evidenced by one of them thinking this pathetic bullshit needed to exist: https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg26034600-500-julia-review-a-brilliant-devastating-sequel-to-nineteen-eighty-four/
It's the lefts playbook.

They are just a mob now, waiting around for the next excuse to act out.
Our failing public school system no longer teaches logical thinking. Consequently students are unprepared for living as an adult.
the view said that the cancelation was.. “a dismantling of our constitution"
Well, The View is continuing to do an excellent job of DISMANTLING it's viewers minds.
LOL!!
So they must've been celebrating? Only white nationalists like the Constitution...
Perhaps you meant to write "only white nationalists like the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution".
FIFY.
I meant what I said, kiddo. Go outside and play.
Man, there’s only ever been one Colbert.
Claudette. One of the greats , one of the GREATEST OF ALL TIME.
This other pile of rat dung doesn’t deserve the name. He needs to slither off and remain silent until the universe collapses.
I’d like him to remain silent when the universe collapses too…

Exactly that!
Putting raisins in meatballs is definitely a reason to throw hands. There is no question about that.
Would you revolt if raisins were added to Thanksgiving stuffing that only cooked in the empty parts of the turkey?
How DARE you! In this house...we neither celebrate problematic holidays, or even mention their fascist-adjacent, racist name.
I've seen meatballs-with-raisins in Indian food, but never Italian. Perhaps I'm just more seasoned (no pun intended) in the former....
agreed on the "you mix your meats". hilarious
that is so wrong
Sicily does it's own thing.
Do these protesters not work? Blows me away that 24 years after 9/11 it’s been completely forgotten. Shame.
They don't work. But, they're "doing the work."
They are just like the Freedom Riders, but without the danger. Or risk. Or inconvenience. Or serious purpose. But other than those things, completely identical freedom fighters!
No wonder they find big city living unaffordable
Glad I don’t live in NYC or any blue hell hole.

But lordie, keep them commies off of our lawns!
Oh boy, George. You are indignant!
Now, get off my lawn...
your commas are in the wrong place. Oh, boy george..,
Well Japan didn’t like his tariffs they negotiated right away as will most every country.

Go Trump!!
George have a drink.
There are more morons per square foot in NYC and Cali than in pretty much the rest of the country put together.
I would say maybe the world.
I guess that’s why they’re the richest most successful ones that the rest of the world thinks of when the US is mentioned.
Like visitors from another planet thinking Disneyland is real?
Loads of super smart successful people obviously!! Which allows the underclass who votes for socialism and free money.
I'm guessing you still believe in "welfare queens in Cadillacs".
(Although nowadays it's what, Teslas?)
You’d be guessing wrong George, if you think that’s who I was talking about. I’m talking about the affluent white kids who have been indoctrinated into believing that socialism is a good thing and that it works if you just do it right. They are the Mamdani voters.
I experienced socialist policies - see my substack “How about some socialism….

Violation of Italian dietary laws is serious business.
Let's just have the civil war.
There's no co-existing with these 💩sacks.
As a bonus -- you get to put them in the cold dead ground.
Be Careful What You Wish For. You Just Might Get It.
Armor up America
Darrell Royal once said "When You Pass The Football, thee are 3 things that can happen. 2 of them are bad."
A civil war May be coming and may be necessary...But
When you start a civil war there are 4 things that can happen. 3 of them are bad
1. You Win.
2. You Lose.
3. Neither side wins and the damn thing goes on and on until no one really remembers why it started.
4. You win, but in winning to destroy that what you were fighting for.
Be Careful What You Wish For. You Just Might Get It.

WTF does #4 even mean?
(In This Case) Win The War, But destroy the Constitution, Ordered Liberty to do it.
Where are all them rednecks when we need them
HUGE turnouts at both events. Could barely see through those thick crowds. Definitely going to make a difference.
the best meatballs are beef and pork
